The Office of STEM Education (OSE) of the School of Arts & Sciences seeks a Professor of Professional Practice at the level of Assistant Professor (preferred), but higher ranks may be considered for exceptional candidates. This is an academic year, non-tenure track position, with an initial contract of 3 years (renewable)

The primary responsibilities will be to oversee implementation of discipline based education research (DBER) in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, oversee assessment and evaluation of course transformations, oversee the Physics Gateway program (instruction for underprepared students in engineering), contribute to assessment efforts of learning outcomes in specific courses and longitudinally across a program or major. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating efforts with appropriate department chairs, deans, faculty teaching courses, and with the appropriate individuals in other schools and departments whose students are served by the introductory physics courses. The candidate will be expected to contribute to STEM education research projects across disciplines through participation in the OSE TRIAD coalition ( and by leading efforts to obtain external funding to support course transformations and DBER projects. As part of the TRIAD coalition, the candidate will contribute to the professional development of faculty, postdocs, graduate teaching assistants, and undergraduate learning assistants who are teaching in or supporting transformed courses.

Minimum Education and Experience
PhD in a STEM discipline, in science education research, or in a related field. Minimum 3 years experience in assessment and evaluation or course development in STEM disciplines, including a thorough knowledge of and experience with implementing discipline based education research, including dissemination of findings through conference presentations, workshops, and peer-reviewed journal publications. A proven track record in obtaining external funding is preferred, but not required.

The Learning Strategies Center (LSC) is the central academic support unit for all undergraduates at Cornell University. The Learning Strategies Center at Cornell University seeks an experienced instructor to teach active-learning based courses designed to strengthen the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in introductory physics courses, organize and run the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTAs) and tutor program and to develop, and implement peer-led learning support. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in effective classroom pedagogies to foster problem solving abilities of students and to encourage them to be independent and efficient learners, develop materials to guide student learning, and be able to work with students in office hours. The candidate will also have experience training, managing, and mentoring undergraduates to provide peer-led learning support. The candidate will contribute to the assessment of the courses they teach and of the peer-led learning support programs. The candidate will be responsive to the ongoing development of alternatives that will continue to provide support for emerging student needs.
This is a three-year renewable 9-month academic appointment beginning in Fall 2017.
As a member of the Learning Strategies Center, the candidate is expected to participate in LSC meetings and meet regularly with the Director of the LSC.
  • Teach LSC's Physics 1012 and Physics 1013 course in Fall and Spring semesters. These are 1 cr supplemental problem solving course for Physics 1112 (Mechanics) and Physics 2213 (Electricity and Magnetism). Emphasis is on development a deep understanding of basic concepts in Electricity & Magnetism through solving problems and exploring at real life applications and helping students develop effective learning strategies.
  • Attend Physics 1112/2213 (parent courses) lectures to become knowledgeable in content, concepts, and approaches, as well as the specific learning outcomes and topics for each class.
  • Develop activities and materials for weekly sections that enhance conceptual learning of topics covered and problem solving in Phys1112/2213 to help students succeed.
  • Include in the support course transferable skills that incorporate successful strategies for the deep learning of physics, such as critical thinking and reading, effective note-taking, prelim preparation, stress reduction, time-management, and procrastination reduction.
  • Promote the ability of students to learn in groups and independently.
  • Offer at least 7 regular office hours per week.
  • Provide feedback on students' academic progress.
  • In collaboration with the LSC Director, assess the effectiveness of Physics 1012/3 in fostering student learning and success.
  • Submit reports on student use of supplemental course support and recommendations for future support.
Peer-led learning support
  • Be familiar with course offerings and content in the introductory physics courses.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and run a general "Physics Learning Center" in the afternoons and evenings Sunday through Thursday with tutors/experienced UTAs. The Learning Center would be open to students in all physics courses.
  • Evaluate the needs of the physics courses supported by UTAs for staffing determination.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire UTAs.
  • Coordinate/schedule UTA assignments in discussion sections, labs, classes, and study halls for physics courses.
  • Meet regularly with UTAs to discuss effective teaching and facilitation strategies and other topics as needed. Coordinate student peer-observations of their facilitation.
  • Review and revise the current UTA program.
  • In collaboration with the LSC Director, assess the effectiveness and impact of the peer-led learning support.
  • Submit reports on student use of peer-led learning support and recommendations for future support.
On-going needs & communication
  • Collaborate with the LSC Director and the Physics Department to determine if there are alternatives to current courses or LSC support that would allow for more individualized preparation for and support of success in physics courses. Develop, implement, and assess new approaches as necessary.
  • Regularly reach out to faculty in Physics to increase awareness of LSC support for students in their courses. Develop strategies, in consultation with Physics faculty, to communicate LSC support to students.
The successful candidate will have:
  • An advanced degree in physics or in teaching physics; PhD preferred.
  • Two to four years of experience teaching college-level physics.
  • Knowledge of effective pedagogies and learning strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting academic achievement of diverse students.

FT at Mid Michigan Community College

Position involves preparing for and teaching and assessing courses in physics and related physical science courses. Course assignments may occur in a classroom setting, learning lab, online or dual enrollment environment. As a full-time faculty member, this individual will also provide academic advising to students and participate in student recruitment and retention activities. The incumbent will also be expected to actively participate in departmental curriculum review, revision, and development as well as assessment of student learning outcomes/ proficiencies. Physics Specialist, University of Montevallo

The purpose of this position is the daily operation of the Science in Motion Physics Program. The ASIM Physics Specialist is a professional staff member of the College of Education.

1. Serve on the ASIM State Advisory Board when required to do so under State Department of Education guidelines.
2. Assist with developing and submitting a yearly budget in accordance with State Accountability Standards and ASIM budget guidelines for approval by the AMSTI State Director.
3. Maintain budget records of all expenditures and work with other ASIM, AMSTI, and Regional Inservice Center personnel to prepare and submit quarterly reports to the State Department of Education in a timely manner.

9. Schedule and oversee ASIM Workshops for Teacher Training, in accordance with UM Regional In-Service Center, AMSTI-UM, and State Department of Education guidelines, for teachers participating in the ASIM program.
10. Attend statewide ASIM meetings as required by the State Director of AMSTI.
11. Work cooperatively with the State Director of AMSTI and other ASIM specialists to ensure a high quality program that is comparable to programs offered in other In-Service Regions.
12. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the Regional In-Service Center, the AMSTI-UM Director, or the State Director of AMSTI.

1-Year Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, Ursinus College PA

Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow - Physics (1 yr.)

The Physics Department of Ursinus College invites applications for a full-time, one-year Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow in Physics for the 2017-18 academic year.  The position is well-suited for a scientist who wishes to prepare for a career of teaching at a primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution that emphasizes excellence in both teaching and research.



This is a full-time, one-year position with responsibilities for teaching (two lectures and one lab in the first semester followed by two lectures in the second) and research. There will be opportunities and an expectation to engage and mentor undergraduate students in research. The physics department will offer the candidate mentoring in establishing a vibrant research program and in teaching, including “flipped classroom” pedagogy and opportunities to work with our Teaching and Learning Initiative.  Preference will be given to those applicants who were recently awarded or are about to earn a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics.

The department seeks a talented individual to teach a combination of courses from among Introductory Astronomy, General Physics, Classical Mechanics, Modern Physics, Mathematical Physics, and Electrodynamics. Preference will be given to applicants prepared to teach Introductory Astronomy. McNeese State University invites qualified applicants for the position of Instructor of Physics in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. This is a full-time, 9-month, unclassified, non-tenure-track position. The appointment begins in August 2017.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

The Instructor of Physics is responsible for functions related to teaching physics at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum including labs, physical science course, calculus and non-calculus based physics course, and potentially upper level course depending on the need. The Instructor will work closely with faculty and students.

Required: Masters degree in physics.
Preferred: Ph.D. in physics.
Salary: $40,000
