The University of the Virgin Islands is advertising one full-time non-tenure-track faculty position. This position is designed to support the expansion of UVI's dual degree applied mathematics program to the Albert A. Sheen campus, to reinforce STEM and STEM education offerings there, and to support the new physics major. Successful candidates will be expected to teach introductory and mid-level physics and mathematics while furthering the goals of these programs outside the classroom and in the community.

Employment is expected to begin in January, 2018. Compensation will be commensurate with the teaching and research experience level of the successful candidates. One-way travel for the appointee and immediate family as well as an allowance for shipping costs will be paid by the University for relocation to St. Croix.

Prime Power School Instructional Overview
The United States Army Prime Power School (USAPPS) trains military personnel in the deployment, installation, operations, and maintenance of the Army's Prime Power Program (P3) power generation and distribution assets in support of theater commanders under the provisions of TM 3-34.45, Engineer Prime Power Operations. The students attending this training are Navy Seabees, Army Reserves and reclassifying Active Army soldiers. The focus of this training is to prepare the students to install, operate and maintain medium and low voltage electrical power generation and distribution equipment for the military. This training prepares the students to be analytical problem solvers in a field that is complex and dangerous. The students must be prepared to read and interpret manufacturer literature and develop a repair solution for the issues encountered.
The Programs of Instruction (POI) for the 12P course has fourteen modules for training that last eight months. The course is divided into two parts that are four months each. The USAPPS currently outsources modules B through E (Academics Training Part) to an academic university. This outsourcing includes modules on Mathematics, Applied Physical Concepts, Mechanical System Engineering, and Electrical System Engineering. POI components, which include lesson plans, examinations, student handouts, student evaluation plans, course management plan, homework, quizzes and practical exercises, have already been developed. The duration of one training cycle is 525 hours, including administrative hours. The hours allocated for each module are as follows: 74 hours of Mathematics, 98 hours of Applied Physical Concepts, 129 hours of Mechanical System Engineering, and 174 hours of Electrical System Engineering. Study time is not included in these hours. There are 50 hours allotted to administrative / study time.
Instructors are responsible for conducting training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri between the hours of 7:30AM to 4:30PM, Monday through Friday except federal holidays or when the government facility is closed due to local or national emergencies, administrative closings, or similar government-directed facility closings.

The successful candidate must have (1) an earned Ph.D. in a science or mathematics discipline or in education, (2) a master's degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, mathematics, or computer science, and (3) a strong research and publication record in science or mathematics education. Preference will be given to candidates with successful grant expression, familiarity with educational technology and distance education, and experience in teaching graduate-level courses and directing doctoral research. Someone with a strong background in statistics is highly desired.

This position is responsible for the maintenance of all physics laboratories so that they are organized, efficient, and suitable for the needs of the curriculum.  The incumbent may teach one or two laboratory sections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 

Order adequate and sufficient supplies and equipment for the teaching of all    physics laboratories;

Oversee the maintenance and repair of the equipment, including computers; perform minor repairs as needed;

Supervise and approve the use of all physics teaching laboratory spaces;
Assist the instructors of all physics labs to make sure that they have everything that they need to teach effectively and efficiently;

Set up and take down experimental set-ups;

May teach one or two Physics laboratory sections for 1^stand 2^ndyear students;

Maintain files and documents pertaining to the purchase, repairs, warranties, and use of all equipment and supplies in the Physics laboratory;

Advise the department concerning current best practices in lab methods and equipment and their uses in teaching;

Organization of the teaching labs and to oversee cleaning and maintaining of the space itself;

Organize the storage and oversee the security of all Physics laboratory equipment and supplies; maintain a written inventory of equipment and locations;

Implement and inform the department of all safety procedures in the Physics laboratories;

Assist in the oversight of the maintenance and use of the machine and electronic shops in the teaching and research laboratories;

Coordinate work assignments for student assistants. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Our ideal candidate profile will include: Bachelor’s degree in Physics or closely related area, a minimum of two years of previous laboratory work experience, and familiarity with major physics laboratory instruments (i.e.calipers, micrometers, oscilloscope, electrical meters, etc)are required.  Master's degree in Physics or closely related area, experience in teaching introductory physics laboratory, and knowledge of basic machinist skills are preferred. This position also requires up-to-date knowledge and understanding of Laboratory safety measures.  The incumbent must possess excellent organizational skills, electronic skills for maintenance of instrumentation, and able to work under pressure.  Must have excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with students, faculty/staff and the public. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to read and interpret documents such as general science journals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff, and in one-on-one situations is essential.  Also, the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals is required, along with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, faculty/staff, and the general public.
