The Opportunity

The School of Physics and Astronomy at Monash University, within the prestigious Faculty of Science, is seeking a dedicated fixed-term Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in astronomy and astrophysics. This position is ideal for an individual with a strong passion for teaching, who can contribute to our full range of astrophysics courses and also engage in research in astrophysics and/or physics and astronomy education. The successful candidate will play a vital role in enhancing the School’s innovative, evidence-based pedagogy in the undergraduate astrophysics curriculum. Five-Year Astronomy Education Research Coordinator, Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Germany

5-year Postdoctoral position in astronomy education research at the Office of Astronomy for Education

Haus der Astronomie / the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy will be hosting the Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) of the International Astronomical Union. The OAE will support and coordinate astronomy
education by astronomy researchers and educators, aimed at primary or secondary schools, world-wide. The OAE will organize an international network of astronomy education stakeholders, organize groups of
scientists to collaborate on creating certain educational resources, facilitate and undertake systematic evaluation of existing resources, and work towards establishing international standards of quality control and evaluation in astronomy education.

Together with the international communities of astronomy researchers and educators, OAE is tasked with:
• bridging the gap between astronomy education research (AER) and education practice, by making the results of AER accessible to education practitioners
• developing high-quality astronomy education resources
• evaluating both specific resources and methods of teaching astronomy, encouraging and qualifying the wider astronomical community in evaluation techniques
• creating and supporting the creation of concept inventories that allow the evaluation of students learning about astronomy
• identifying best-practice resources and methods for teaching astronomy in general, and for specific aspects of teaching astronomy (e.g. observing with remote telescopes, working with authentic astronomical data, teaching specific sub-topics of astronomy, issues of accessibility and inclusion as well as of diversity).

The holder of this position will serve as the Astronomy Education Research Coordinator of the OAE, and in this position will contribute to those activities, in particular those that directly involve astronomy education or physics education research, and take responsibility for suitable projects and sub-projects.

Applicants should:
• have a PhD in astronomy education research (AER), physics education research (PER), or a PhD in a related subject area and equivalent qualifications in AER/PER
• have practical and, if possible, research experience in evaluating astronomy education resources, activities, and teaching methods • be thoroughly familiar with the accepted academic standards for evaluating education resources, activities, and teaching methods
• have experience in collaborating in an international academic environment; experiences with editing and publishing collaborative works are considered a plus

The position has a preferred starting date of April 1, 2020 and is limited until February, 28, 2025. The remuneration is based on the German collective wage agreement for the public sector (TVöD) depending
on qualification and experience in level E13. Social benefits are granted according to the regulations for public service. FT at Suffolk University

The Department of Physics and Engineering requests a full-time, non-tenure track, Instructor position starting July 1, 2017 and ending June 30, 2018.
This position would support the planetary sciences track in the physics major, and the laboratory science offerings for non-majors. The instructor will be responsible for developing a formal laboratory course to complement an existing course offering for non-majors.
The standard teaching load would be 8 courses a year (4/4). This would require curriculum development, as well as shepherding the course through the governance process for approval, which would constitute a portion of the service component associated with this position.
Formally supporting the resulting laboratory courses will also fall under the service obligations for this position. Additionally, this instructor would advise students in the planetary science track and mentor students in their senior project work. The strongest candidates would be able to contribute to other courses offered out of the department, physics, astronomy, or other nonmajors STE courses.

Note: The position is officially open field, but the department has two physics education researchers and several of us would like to add another PER or astronomy education research person. We have MS but not PhD students in the department, so interest in involving undergraduates in research is a plus.
  

The Wright State University Department of Physics is seeking candidates for a Physics Department tenure track faculty position starting in the Fall of 2017. The position continues a successful, longstanding program emphasizing productive growth in the department, with an additional focus on increasing the numbers of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the department. All areas of physics research, either adding to or complementing existing experimental and theoretical research areas, will be considered. Candidates that can enhance the recently created Interdisciplinary Applied Sciences and Mathematics Ph.D. program are especially valuable. A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field is required. Requirements: Ph.D. in Physics or a related field and willingness to teach courses in physics and astronomy. Research areas in the department include Observational Astrophysics, Biophysics and Nonlinear Dynamics, and Physics Education Research. The department operates the Three College Observatory, which has a 0.81-m telescope with an Echelle spectrograph, and the Physics Department Planetarium. UNCG and the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University jointly operate the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering; opportunities exist for collaborative work with faculty in the department and at JSNN.
