Director of Laboratories at Kansas State University

The Director of Laboratories at the KSU Department of Physics is responsible for the coordination of instructional support for the Department’s undergraduate courses, training and oversight of teaching assistants, coordinating assessment of learning outcomes, developing new and innovative instruction and preparing instruction-related proposals for external and internal funding. The teaching load of the Director will primarily involve one introductory course in physics or astronomy per semester. The Director oversees approximately 30 graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants.

The Department applies new pedagogical methods and technology in its introductory and advanced undergraduate courses and seeks to expand these methods. [See Am J. Phys. 74 1077-84, (2006)] The Director of Laboratories will actively collaborate with faculty in facilitating these changes.

The Center for Research in STEM Education (Maine RiSE Center) at the University of Maine has three postdoctoral research associate positions requiring expertise in discipline-based education research in physical science or mathematics.

The successful candidates will play an important role in the Maine Physical Sciences Partnership Project, a multi-million-dollar Math and Science Partnership (MSP) project through the Maine RiSE Center, to target the teaching and learning of physical sciences in grades 6-9 as well as the preparation of science teachers at the University of Maine. The project includes (1) the selection and implementation of coherent, research-supported curricula, (2) provision of ongoing intensive professional development, (3) assessment of the impact of the curricular implementation on student learning, (4) reform of university-level STEM instruction. Postdoctoral associates may be involved in research and implementation in one or more aspects of the project.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in the physical or earth sciences, mathematics, science or mathematics education or a closely related field, have a strong record in discipline-based education research, and have experience in teaching. Preference will be given to those who have experience working with middle and/or high school teachers.

These positions are twelve-month appointments, with the possibility of renewal. The start date is flexible, but preference is to start in the spring of 2011.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE Institutional Transformation

Postdocs at Carnegie Mellon

PostPIER is a post-doctoral training program to be funded by the Institute
of Education Sciences that aims to train a “new breed” of learning
scientists who will acquire the skills and experience necessary to advance
our knowledge about human learning and to translate that knowledge into
effective instruction. This program is built upon our successful
pre-doctoral training program.

We seek applicants from strong doctoral programs in areas such as
psychology, computer science, or STEM education. Selected trainees will work
with faculty in CMU’s Department of Psychology, Human Computer Interaction

VAP at Bates College

The Bates College Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications from physicists for a position as Visiting Assistant Professor for 2011-12 with likely renewal for 2012-13. The successful candidate must demonstrate interest in teaching in a vigorous undergraduate program, welcome the opportunity for close interaction with students, and be able to guide research by advanced undergraduate physics majors. Experimentalists preferred. Outstanding applicants who are ABD will be considered. Salary is competitive.

TT at Monmouth College

Monmouth College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in the Physics Department beginning in August 2011. Rank open. We will consider candidates from all sub-disciplines, but those with a background in biophysics, condensed matter, or AMO are particularly encouraged to apply. TT at Seton Hall University

The Department of Physics at Seton Hall University invites applications to fill a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position beginning the Fall 2010 semester. We seek a candidate who demonstrates excellence in teaching lecture and laboratory courses at all levels especially to students of varied backgrounds. The candidate is expected to improve teaching laboratories and upgrade their facilities. A Ph.D. in Physics or related field is required. Preferences will be given to candidates with experimental condensed matter background or a related field but other areas of expertise will also be considered. The candidate is expected to build an on campus research program, successfully seek sponsored research grants, involve undergraduate students in scholarly activity, andshould be willing to teach in the University’s interdisciplinary core curriculum. TT at West Virginia State University

The Department of Physics at West Virginia State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position, beginning August, 2011. Requirements for the position include a Ph.D. in Physics or near-completion of the doctorate. The Department offers support courses for associate and baccalaureate programs, and is trying to start a program to prepare secondary-school physics teachers. The primary duties are teaching lower division courses in physics and physical science, but research, especially of a type that could involve undergraduate students, is welcomed, and there are on-going grant-funded research projects in the other science departments. The person who fills this position will teach classes meeting the general education requirements of the University and the needs of education majors: astronomy, weather and climate, geology and physical science (physics, chemistry and earth-space science), and is encouraged to develop additional laboratory based classes at this level. In addition, the applicant will participate in teaching physics courses for science majors and pre-professional students, general physics, physics for scientists and engineers, and radiation physics.

TT and 2 VAP at St. John's University

The Department of Physics of St. John’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is seeking applications for one tenure track Assistant Professor position in Physics for its Queens campus, beginning September 1, 2011. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics, biomedical engineering or a closely related field and postdoctoral experience is preferred. The primary qualification for this position is excellence in teaching and research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at all levels of the undergraduate physics curriculum as well as some engineering courses, and develop a research program preferably in nanotechnology with emphasis in biomedical and energy applications.

The Department is also seeking applications for two contract appointments for full-time Assistant Professors for its Queens campus, beginning September 1, 2011. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or a M.S. with 36 additional credits in physics, engineering or a closely related field. The primary qualification for this position is excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at all levels of the undergraduate physics and engineering curriculum and develop research program involving undergraduate students. One position is a one year contract and the other position is a one year contract renewable for one additional year.
