Position Summary

Michigan State University hosts cutting edge STEM+ (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and adjacent fields) education and participatory and community-engaged research to address the most pressing issues facing preK-12, postsecondary, and informal STEM education. To address these important problems, we have gathered many of the most creative scholars nationally, positioning MSU as a leader in STEM+ education and community engaged research.

MSU is recruiting Research Associates (postdoctoral fellows) to advance this work and invites applications to join a cohort of up to 6 positions to train and work on Participatory and Community-Engaged Research in the context of STEM education (STEM Ed PaCER). Focus of research projects may include but is not limited to: Scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL), Discipline-based education research (DBER), K-12 education, informal education, and participatory and community-engaged domains.

Experience, both lived and academic, in or with Indigenous/Native/First Nations communities, building and maintaining relationships with community partners, and experience in community-engaged research and/or STEM+ education research are highly desirable. Research Associates will work with teams from MSU, The College of Menominee Nation (CMN) and The State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) to train and then engage in independent scholarship, including access to research funds. Opportunities may include research and/or training with Indigenous communities in Fiji, Mexico, and sovereign Indigenous Nations in Wisconsin, Michigan, and/or upstate New York. Research funding will also be provided. This cohort is part of MSU’s NSF-funded STEM Ed PaCER program.

Research Associate salary will be $70,000/year.

 OSU Physics Lecturer Position

 

The Ohio State University Physics Department invites applications for up to three new Lecturer positions beginning August 15, 2023.   The position is full-time (9 or 12 month) with benefits and is initially a one-year appointment with the expectation that the position is renewable for continued 3-year appointments at the discretion of the department chair. The anticipated salary begins at $51,300 but may be higher depending on instructional assignments, and there is the longer-term possibility of promotion to Senior Lecturer.

 

OSU has recently been awarded an HHMI grant to improve STEM educational equity, and the Physics Department is committed to the process of substantially improving its instructional and assessment approaches. Central to our effort is the development and implementation of evidence-based, inclusive practices. Lecturers will be part of a dynamic team focused on these efforts. Responsibilities will include teaching, TA training, and collaboration on development, innovation, implementation, and assessment of instructional materials and practices.  The department has a well-regarded Physics Education Research group that is actively engaged in this effort.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in physics education research, beginning August 1, 2023.  The successful candidate will use data science or artificial intelligence methodologies (e.g., machine learning, data analytics, educational data mining) to tackle pressing problems and opportunities in undergraduate physics and/or data science education, and to generate foundational knowledge in physics teaching and learning. The candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program in this area. The candidate will also contribute to high-quality instruction and mentoring in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  The Department has a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.

 

The successful candidate will be part of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to Advance Teaching & Learning Cluster, a group of six tenure-track faculty hired in the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences and the Mary Frances Early College of Education. Scholarship conducted by cluster faculty has the potential to enhance assessment and active learning in classrooms; illuminate previously unseen inequities in classrooms and educational systems; transform educational data into new insights that benefit students, teachers, and administrators; and improve data science education in K-12 and higher education. This cluster will strengthen and expand UGA’s position as a national leader in discipline-based education research and build on existing core strengths in data science and artificial intelligence for teaching and learning.  The candidate will also join a growing community of 14+ discipline-based education researchers in biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering.  The cluster faculty will be able to work closely with the Scientists Engaged in Education Research (SEER) Center, the Artificial Intelligence for STEM Education (AI4STEM Education) Center, the Digital Humanities Lab, and the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research.

 

Qualifications:

All candidates must have a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in physics or a related discipline.  Preference will be given to applicants who have published their physics education research, who have at least one year of postdoctoral experience in education research or teaching, and who have at least one semester of teaching experience at the undergraduate level. We also seek candidates who have knowledge of and a record of employing inclusive and evidence-based instruction, and who have demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in science and education.
