Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

The Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program within the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academies is designed to engage its Fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy. Fellows develop basic skills essential to working or participating in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels.

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research in any social/behavioral science, medical/health discipline, physical or biological science, any field of engineering, law/business/public administration, or any relevant interdisciplinary field within the last five years are eligible to apply.

Graduate Fellowships in East Asia

The National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) is a flagship international fellowship program for developing the next generation of globally engaged U.S. scientists and engineers knowledgeable about the Asian and Pacific regions. The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.

RA or Postdoc in Spatial Cognition, University College London

There is a vacancy for a Research Assistant or a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a project studying the development of spatial cognition in children. The position is based in Dr Marko Nardini's lab at UCL and is funded for a period of 36 months in the first instance by a Scholar Award from the James S. McDonnell Foundation. The project will extend the Principal Investigator's previous work on spatial cognitive development (for reprints, see http://tinyurl.com/nardini), focusing on:

• - Developing new methods for testing spatial cognition in early and mid- childhood, using motion tracking in real environments, and in immersive virtual reality.
• - Developing new tasks to compare human spatial cognitive development with development in model organisms whose behaviour can be related to neural substrates (in collaboration with colleagues at UCL; see http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/328/5985/1573)
• -Mathematical modelling and longitudinal studies of spatial cognitive development; studies of spatial behaviour in the wider contexts of reward-mediated learning and episodic memory

The successful applicant will carry out a range of duties, including helping to set up and run new developmental spatial studies in real environments and in virtual reality.

The post will suit an applicant with an interest in spatial cognition, an aptitude for working with young participants, and the ability to manage the technical demands of testing using motion tracking and virtual reality. Applicants must have a good first degree (BSc or equivalent) in a scientific discipline related to experimental psychology and be proficient in mathematics. Previous experience in cognitive, perceptual or developmental research, programming, or mathematical modelling would be an advantage. At the Research Associate level, a completed PhD in a relevant discipline is also required. The post is subject to a satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.

The starting salary range is £27,796 to £29,318 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance (Research Assistant), or £31,778 to £34,466 per annum (Research Associate).

Graduate Research Assistant Needed to Study Institution-Wide Transformation
of Introductory Science Labs

WMU researcher Charles Henderson has been contracted to study the
implementation and impact of a major science reform effort at Iowa State
University. With support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Iowa
State is planning to change their introductory science labs to allow
students to pose meaningful questions (as opposed to traditional ‘cookbook’
style labs). Environmental issues will be a major overarching theme of the

The position will start in September 2010 and last for four years. The goal
of the project is to study how and to what extent these changes become

Title of Project: Incorporating public responses to health communication into epidemiological models

The aim of this project is to develop a theoretical framework that explains how and why individuals learn about and change their behaviour in response to public health communication and other sources of information about infectious diseases such as
swine flu. The project is intended to support the evolution of existing models used to predict disease spread to take individual and social processes into account.

The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that applicants may have a background in a range of areas, including science education, science communication, health psychology, epidemiology, etc. The generous four-year studentship covers home/EU or international fees, a stipend at recommended rates and a travel allowance.

Doctoral and Post Doctoral Posts in Mathematics and Science Education

The Marang Centre for Mathematics and Science Education in the School of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand aims to promote excellence, innovation and, leadership in mathematics and science education. The centre wishes to make appointments as soon as possible as detailed below. The Marang Centre has obtained funding from the Standard Bank of South Africa for research into five areas. These are:

Multilingualism and the learning of mathematics and science in school
Mathematical literacy
Science Awareness and Informal Learning
Mathematics and science knowledge for teaching
Effective methods for teaching mathematics and science

Additionally, a new project will shortly be under way focused on professional development within the teaching of secondary mathematics. There is also an interest in Marang in primary mathematics teaching and in tertiary teaching of maths and science.

We wish to make six doctoral or post doctoral appointments – four in mathematics and two in science education in 2009. Thus 6 full time posts are available, tenable for 4 years in the case of doctoral fellows and 2 years in the case of post doctoral fellows.

Qualifications and Conditions:

Postdoctoral students must have completed a doctoral degree in either mathematics or science education within the last five years at a university other than Wits University. In exceptional cases we may be able to motivate for Wits graduates. Interest and/or expertise in one of the above areas.

Doctoral Students must be accepted to register or be registered at Wits University for a doctoral degree in one of the above research areas.

In both cases, an untaxed allowance and medical insurance will be provided.

Undergrad Summer Research at Florida International

research internship. The internship is an opportunity for undergraduate

2 PhD studentships at Erasmus University Rotterdam

In the practice of education, tests are mostly used for assessment purposes only. However, research in cognitive psychology has demonstrated that the memory for tested information is also strengthened by the retrieval process during the test. This so-called ‘testing effect’ implies that testing information can provide a long-term benefit over restudying the same information and can prevent memory decay for learned information. The research projects “The power of self-testing for comprehension” (Project 1) and “Optimizing test-enhanced learning in an educationally relevant context: The influence of retention interval, learner expertise, and feedback” (Project 2) are both aimed at applying the testing effect to education, especially to learning from texts. Project 1 focuses on the question whether tests can enhance both long-term retention as well as comprehension of texts. Project 2 focuses on the question when and en how often tests should be used to prevent the forgetting of learned information.

The two PhD candidates will closely collaborate in their research projects. Also, the candidates will be employed as tutors for courses in the field of cognitive psychology, educational psychology and/or research methodology.

Master's degree in Cognitive Psychology or Educational Psychology, or a related field
Excellent research and writing skills and experience with experimental research (preferably in applied settings)

Course description (summary)
To work with Professor Postlethwaite and other colleagues in the field of science teacher education, to explore the varied issues arising from a Leverhulme funded study which is investigating the learning of newly qualified science and mathematics teachers (NQTs) during their induction year.

In 2009 Professor Postlethwaite will be completing a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. This is investigating the learning of newly qualified science and mathematics teachers (NQTs) during their induction year. Initial results are suggesting that this phase of teachers’ learning is problematic. A particular concern is that NQT mentoring provides little opportunity to address these issues. There is a strong indication that an effective partnership between higher education and schools should support induction as it does the initial education of teachers.

You will work with Professor Postlethwaite and other colleagues in the field of science teacher education, to explore the varied issues arising from the Leverhulme funded study. You will be part of the School’s research group that is concerned with teacher education and have access to the data from the Leverhulme project so that your work can start from a well informed position. It is also expected that you will take the analysis of these data further than will be possible within the constraints of the project, gaining maximum benefit from the work already completed.

You would therefore be expected to:

undertake a three-year empirical study into ‘The further development of induction for newly qualified science and mathematics teachers’
prepare papers for research conferences (years two and three)
You will have an opportunity to undertake the School’s ESRC-recognised MSc in Research Methods in Education and, following an Initial Needs Analysis, will be encouraged to secure further training and support through the Effective Researcher Development Programme, run at the University. The studentship is full-time and you may be able to contribute to teaching on the School’s Secondary Science PGCE programme.
