Studentships and postdocs (x6) at University of the Witwatersrand

Doctoral and Post Doctoral Posts in Mathematics and Science Education

The Marang Centre for Mathematics and Science Education in the School of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand aims to promote excellence, innovation and, leadership in mathematics and science education. The centre wishes to make appointments as soon as possible as detailed below. The Marang Centre has obtained funding from the Standard Bank of South Africa for research into five areas. These are:

Multilingualism and the learning of mathematics and science in school
Mathematical literacy
Science Awareness and Informal Learning
Mathematics and science knowledge for teaching
Effective methods for teaching mathematics and science

Additionally, a new project will shortly be under way focused on professional development within the teaching of secondary mathematics. There is also an interest in Marang in primary mathematics teaching and in tertiary teaching of maths and science.

We wish to make six doctoral or post doctoral appointments – four in mathematics and two in science education in 2009. Thus 6 full time posts are available, tenable for 4 years in the case of doctoral fellows and 2 years in the case of post doctoral fellows.

Qualifications and Conditions:

Postdoctoral students must have completed a doctoral degree in either mathematics or science education within the last five years at a university other than Wits University. In exceptional cases we may be able to motivate for Wits graduates. Interest and/or expertise in one of the above areas.

Doctoral Students must be accepted to register or be registered at Wits University for a doctoral degree in one of the above research areas.

In both cases, an untaxed allowance and medical insurance will be provided.
