University of Copenhagen Associate/Assistant Professor in Science or Math Education

At the Department of Science Education, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, a position as Associate Professor, alternatively as Assistant Professor (see below*), within the field of Science or Mathematics Education with reference to University Pedagogy, is open to appointment from September 1, 2009 (or as soon as possible).

Job description and applicant qualifications

The Associate Professor's core duties will be teaching, development, and research in the area of university pedagogy and science education, including mathematics education, mostly at the tertiary level. A research record at the level of an Associate Professorship is required. Candidates should therefore have a research record at an international level within science
or mathematics education, while preference will be given to candidates whose research addresses issues related mostly to university teacher training.

Teaching activities will primarily include university teaching training programmes, including supervision, as well as the course Introduction to University Pedagogy. Teaching at the Dept. should conform to quality standards outlined in Danish (see kvalitetsstandard for undervisning at http://www.ind.ku.dk/undervisning-kurser/evalueringer/).

The position also involves education development activities including projects carried out in cooperation with other Depts. and academic staff of the Faculty of Science aiming to improve the quality, in terms of student learning, of the teaching and educational programmes of the Faculty. Qualifications in research, teaching and educational development will all be given significant weight in the final choice of the
candidate to be retained. According to the Ministerial Circular on Job Structure, appointment to this position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent scientific qualification.

Research area

Research will include, but need not be limited to, methods and activities which support teaching and development activities at the Dept. on a longer-term basis to promote synergistic effects. As research collaborations within the department are valued, candidates will be preferred who could join efforts with one or more permanent members of the Dept. The Dept. of Science Education performs research, development, and teaching in science education (including mathematics). It has activities at all educational levels, but mainly within upper secondary and tertiary education. *For Assistant Professors

According to the Ministerial Circular on Job Structure, appointment requires a Ph.D. or corresponding scientific qualification.
Appointment to this position is temporary and limited to 4 years. During that period, the Assistant Professor must attend a course in pedagogy (adjunktp=E6dagogikum) or provide evidence of similar qualifications. If an applicant is appointed as an Assistant Professor, the appointment will be transferred to an Associate Professorship after a positive assessment for the
position of Associate Professor. This can earliest be done after 2 years employment as Assistant Professor.

Terms of employment

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement (in Danish) between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (http://www.perst.dk/~/media/Circular/2008/061-08-pdf.ashx).

While negotiation for salary supplement is possible, the starting salaries are currently:

- Assistant Professors up to DKK 376,296 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 64,346).
- Associate Professors up to DKK 407,256 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 69,640).
