Assistant Teaching Professor for the Mathematical Biology Curriculum, UCLA

 As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, and building on a decade of hiring faculty who are committed to supporting the success of the diverse undergraduate student population at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the Division of Life Sciences, Department of Integrated Biology & Physiology Department, and the Life Science Education Department invites applicants for an Assistant Teaching Professor. An Assistant Teaching Professor is a full-time faculty position with potential for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor, which is equivalent to tenure, and is a full member of the Academic Senate. The Division of Life Sciences is deeply committed to building a community of scholars in education, and is currently conducting three separate searches for Assistant Teaching Professors. 

 

Teaching Professors’ expertise and responsibilities center on undergraduate education, and the scholarly analysis and improvement of pedagogy. The successful candidate will employ and conduct research on inclusive, evidence-based, innovative teaching practices, and will effectively educate and support diverse student populations. They will also engage with graduate students and faculty on pedagogical innovation. The candidate for this position should have expertise in Mathematical Biology, Mathematics, or Mathematics Education

 

Over the past 10 years, UCLA has developed a revolutionary approach to teaching mathematics to life science students. This two-quarter course is called Mathematics for Life Scientists (LIFESCI 30) and is based on the text Modeling Life. LIFESCI 30, which heavily incorporates active and inclusive teaching practices, has been shown to improve student interest and self-efficacy in Mathematics, performance in future STEM classes, and retention in STEM. The candidate’s primary teaching responsibility will be teaching this class, and will also include opportunities to develop an upper-division course applying Mathematics in Biology.

Qualified applicants must have the following to be considered for the position: 

  1. a Ph.D. in a Mathematical or Life Science discipline, with a background in mathematics, math education, mathematical modeling, or dynamical systems.
  2. Experience in teaching undergraduates
  3. Foundational knowledge of evidenced-based teaching practices and pedagogical innovation,
  4. The ability to teach mathematical modeling and linear algebra in the Mathematics for Life Science Curriculum. 

 

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. The salary range for this position is $74,600-$97,200. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Position Summary

Successful candidates must have earned a PhD in a relevant field prior to the planned start of the position (August 16, 2024) and demonstrate a record of research accomplishments in Computing Education, Mathematics Education, Statistics Education, or an overlapping and related discipline at the postsecondary level commensurate to rank. Applicants with PhD degrees in non-quantitative fields of expertise will also be considered if they have also earned an advanced degree (e.g., master’s) in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, statistics).

Candidates must demonstrate their potential or provide a record of external funding and/or improvements in undergraduate STEM education commensurate with their experience and rank; and must demonstrate ability to contribute to a climate of inclusion, to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups in STEM, and a commitment to excellent, inclusive teaching and service. The College of Education as the oldest college at Rowan University has a long-held commitment to excellence in teaching, community engagement, and innovation in scholarship. The College of Education is searching for a qualified and experienced math or science content specialist with teaching experience and/or expertise in addressing content at elementary grade levels.
The appointment consists of but is not limited to teaching a broad range of elementary education courses that include school visits during associated field experiences as well as developing specialized math or science content matter programs emphasizing research in practice and social justice. The successful candidate will demonstrate a constructivist based theoretical framework centered on a philosophy that is a grounded in social justice. This is a full time tenure track joint appointment in the Departments of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Education and Inclusive and Integrated Education (IIE).

The Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics Education (STEAM) is a newly formed department at the College of Education with the focus on developing future educators that are competent in teaching interdisciplinary approaches grounded in research and practice. The department offers initial licensure programs: one at an undergraduate level with a dual major focus in art, music, health exercise science and education and one at a graduate level with a focus on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science and Mathematics in secondary education.



The Department of Inclusive and Integrated Education (IIE) offers a variety of opportunities for caring and dedicated undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate students to pursue initial certification as early childhood or elementary teachers as well as an endorsement as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities. In addition, the department offers graduate programs that provide advanced study in curriculum and teaching, including the M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership, the M.S.T. in Elementary Education and the M.A. in Special Education program. The M.A. in Learning Disabilities program is also offered for students interested in pursuing certification as a Learning Disabilities Specialist. • A terminal degree (PhD or EdD) in math or science education or related field
• A Bachelor or Master’s degree in math or science content
• Meet minimum qualifications for licensure or equivalent to teach grades P-6 in New Jersey

• Demonstrated commitment to fostering academic achievement, social and personal responsibility, and social justice through innovation in elementary math or science education

Southern University and A&M College is a historically black college located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Baton Rouge campus is located on Scott’s Bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in the northern section of the City of Baton Rouge.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of two graduate courses per semester, direct and serve on dissertation committees, establish a research program, solicit funding, publish in referred journals, make presentations at conferences, serve on departmental and institutional committees, recruit students, and otherwise contribute to the success of the program.
