A postdoctoral position focused on writing-to-learn pedagogies in science education is available in the Biology Department at Duke University. The position is part of an NSF-funded IUSE grant (Improving Undergraduate STEM Education) to understand the role of writing in promoting learning and engagement for undergraduates at the introductory and capstone levels, with particular attention to the mechanisms of effect. The responsibilities of the position include: executing empirical studies of student learning and engagement in collaboration with researchers and course instructors from biology, chemistry, statistics, and other disciplines/departments across three universities (Duke University, University of Minnesota, and University of Michigan); performing extensive quantitative analysis of new and previously-collected data; and disseminating products of our efforts to both research communities (through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and written reports) and communities of practice (through annual professional development workshops and subsequent virtual collaborations).

Applicants should have a background in program evaluation and scientific teaching, have strong writing and quantitative analysis skills, be highly motivated to participate in a diverse research team, and possess exceptional organizational and management skills. Experience with teaching through writing is desirable, but not required. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop expertise in writing-to-learn pedagogies. A Ph.D. in disciplinary-based education research in STEM is required.

Responsibilities will primarily center on supporting faculty in the change process by identifying appropriate material resources to support assessment of teaching in multiple STEM disciplines, working closely with department leads to provide professional consultations with participating faculty on the use of identified materials, supporting the implementation of assessment measures by managing data collection and analysis, and consulting with faculty to reflect on the results.  Associates will also work with project staff to develop an online campus-wide, potentially national, portal to assist faculty in finding libraries of educational measures, easing use of such measures and sharing results.  Opportunities will also exist for working toward promoting the use of evidence-based measures of teaching impact and conducting research on the process of institutional transformation.   The Fellows will collaborate with a broad group of engaging and nationally renowned faculty, post-docs, and graduate students across multiple STEM departments at the University of Colorado.  The overall project also includes studies of institutional transformation, and provides opportunities for postdocs to participate in studies of individual and institutional uptake of new assessment tools and practices.

Qualifications: The successful candidates will have a strong disciplinary background in a STEM area and extensive experience in education research. Experience in biology or mechanical engineering is a plus as these are the initial departments on the project. The appointment is a one-year, renewable appointment with the preference that the successful candidate will be able to commit to the project for 2 years. Two Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions in Discipline-Based Education Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The successful candidates will be part of an interdisciplinary team working to disseminate and integrate research-based instructional strategies in introductory STEM courses at UNL. These postdocs will work closely with co-advising faculty, Dr. Leilani Arthurs (Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) and Dr. Brian Couch (School of Biological Sciences).  They will assist with one or more of the following projects: (i) research on student and faculty perceptions of course instruction, (ii) organization and evaluation of a faculty mentoring program, and (iii) teaching and evaluation of faculty professional development workshops. 

Applicants must have completed a PhD in a STEM field or STEM education field by the start of the appointment.  Preferred applicants will have experience in STEM education research, faculty professional development, and research-based instructional strategies. Although the focus of this position is quantitative research, applicants should also be comfortable with qualitative techniques, as many BSCS projects use a mixed methods approach.

Non-Tenure-Track Career Faculty Position

The University of Oregon (UO) College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a Program Coordinator for a new, interdisciplinary Science Literacy Program (SLP). This non-tenure track career faculty position at the rank of Instructor or Senior Instructor is currently part of an HHMI-funded Undergraduate Science Education program and is anticipated to continue indefinitely. The Coordinator will collaborate with four departments, Biology, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, and Physics, and will be a member of one of these departments. The SLP goals are improving science literacy course teaching, providing faculty development opportunities, and training students in teaching and communication. The Coordinator will administer the SLP, participate in curriculum and pedagogy development, participate in program assessment and results dissemination, and coordinate with other UO programs.

The newly established Yale-NUS College (YNC) in Singapore, a collaboration between the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Yale University, announces the availability of faculty positions at all ranks and in all areas of the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts. For the natural science positions, candidates in any area of science, mathematics or computer science will be considered. We seek outstanding teacher-scholars for the inaugural faculty who have a particular interest in undergraduate teaching in a residential setting and are committed to innovative pedagogy. Candidates with enthusiasm for contributing to an interdisciplinary common curriculum in the liberal arts are particularly welcome. Faculty members are expected to maintain a strong research focus, with particular strength in mentoring undergraduates in research experiences. Startup funds, and continuing research funds on a competitive basis, are available through the College. The College will not have disciplinary departments, but joint appointments with NUS departments can be arranged in cases where the involvement of YNC faculty with research facilities, graduate students, and other activities at NUS would be mutually beneficial.

1) PERMANENT PROGRAM DIRECTOR POSITIONS (deadline 9/2/11)

The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) seeks candidates with expertise in research on STEM learning and education for one or more permanent Program Director positions.

NSF Program Directors assume primary responsibility for carrying out the Agency’s overall mission—to support innovative and merit-reviewed projects in basic research and education that contribute to the nation’s technical strength, security, and welfare. Program Directors possess knowledge in the appropriate fields, a commitment to high standards, a considerable breadth of interest in and receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.

The central duties of the position include: contributing to a coherent vision for EHR and STEM education research; participating in collaborative activity in relation to STEM research, practice, and policy; organizing and overseeing proposal review panels; evaluating, negotiating, and funding research proposals; managing awarded projects; and drafting solicitations. Successful candidates are expected to serve in one principal division of EHR, but, as requested, will also contribute to the work of other EHR divisions, work cooperatively across the entire Foundation, and interact productively with other agencies. They will be abreast of the cutting-edge research literatures in fields relevant to this position and will be able to provide high-level advice to others in the directorate and Foundation. Successful candidates should establish contacts and maintain active involvement in the field through participation in meetings and other relevant activities, and through the pursuit of a personal scholarly agenda, as workload permits.

Applicants for the EHR Program Director position must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience and six or more years of successful research experience relevant to the position, such as education or learning research in any science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field, evaluation, statistics, measurement, or any of the behavioral, cognitive, or social science bases of STEM learning. Ideal candidates bring strong methodological or measurement expertise in combination with knowledge of teaching or learning in STEM. The candidate should also have the ability to think broadly but critically across domains, and to participate in discussions of research issues in STEM education at a national or international level.

In addition to the EHR positions, the Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings (DRL) is engaged in an ongoing nationwide search for temporary Program Directors.

DRL currently manages the following programs: Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE), Discovery Research K-12 (DRK-12), Informal Science Education (ISE), and Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST), in addition to Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER), and other programs.

Candidates for the DRL Program Director position should have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience, and additional experience and expertise depending on which DRL Cluster they are applying to: Knowledge Building (KB); Resources, Models, and Technologies (RMT); or Lifelong Learning Cluster (LLC).
