Directorship at University of South Alabama

The University of South Alabama invites applications for the Founding Director of its Center for Integrative Studies in STEM. A joint venture among the Colleges of Education, Arts & Sciences, and Engineering, CISSTEM is intended to promote action research and innovative approaches to understanding learning in mathematics and science and the integration of educational practices in the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Applicants must have an earned doctorate and be eligible for appointment to the faculty in the College of Education at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, commensurate with previous experience and qualifications in one of the disciplines represented within the College. The successful applicant will have: an outstanding record of scholarly activity, including refereed publications and external funding; teaching and administrative experience at the university or school level; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across colleges and in partnership with school districts and local business and community organizations; and excellent administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have a degree in one or more of the STEM disciplines

Primary responsibilities include: providing leadership in the development and implementation of a vision for the Center; managing an active program of research and external funding for the Center; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; developing innovative programs with post-secondary institutions, schools, and businesses to improve math, science, and engineering education; leading recruitment and mentoring of STEM faculty; and service on department, college, and university committees.

Application procedure: Initial review of applications will begin November 28, 2011 and will continue until the position is filled. Starting date for the appointment is anticipated to be January 1, 2012 but no later than August 15, 2012.
