Physics Senior Lecturer, Stanford University

 Senior Lecturer Position in Physics, Stanford University, Department of Physics


The Stanford Physics Department invites applications for a Senior Lecturer position to begin in Autumn quarter 2022. This position is a full-time, twelve-month, benefits-eligible appointment. The initial appointment is for a term of 5 years with possible reappointment after that. The duties involve teaching introductory physics courses during the academic year and the summer quarter, possibly in partnership with a faculty member, and assisting the department in a major restructuring of the introductory physics courses, both in terms of the course sequences offered and the curriculum and pedagogy of the courses. The Senior Lecturer should be knowledgeable in curriculum and course design, including effective pedagogy and equitable assessment, as well as in evaluating the success of new offerings, and able to work collaboratively with faculty in the course restructuring process. A Ph.D. or equivalent is required. In addition to instruction, the candidate will be responsible for helping to manage the undergraduate program, especially the introductory courses, including mentoring and managing the course teaching assistants, advising students, supporting faculty new to teaching these courses, and participating in Department committees, as appropriate. They will also contribute to ensuring continuous improvement of these courses, monitoring the outcomes, and making ongoing improvements.

TWO STEM Education Postdocs, Texas State University

 Postdocs in STEM Education at Texas State University

We are advertising two postdoctoral-level positions related to equity and instructional change in undergraduate STEM instruction at Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

Position #1 - The first position is associated with the NSF IUSE-HSI grant: Building Capacity: Creating Faculty-Student Communities for Culturally Relevant Institutional Change (NSF #1928696, PI Heather Galloway, Co-PIs Eleanor Close, Alice Olmstead, Cynthia Luxford, and Li Feng) at Texas State University. The position will primarily focus on research and will involve synergistic programmatic activities. In collaboration with the rest of the project team, the selected candidate will be expected to engage in research activities such as: conducting and synthesizing the results of focus groups with STEM students; gathering and analyzing institutional student data; working with STEM faculty to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative student data using research-based assessments; amending materials for institutional review board approval; and disseminating results through publications and presentations and performing other management and administrative tasks as needed. 

 

Review of applications will begin on May 27 and continue until the position is filled. Start dates are flexible but between June 1 and July 31 is preferred. Initial appointments will be for one year, renewable as funding remains available (2-3 years total).   

 

Position #2 - The second position is associated with the NSF grant: STEM Equity Project (NSF #1928596, PI Ben Van Dusen, co-PIs Eleanor Close, Robert Talbot, Jayson Nissen) This four-year project includes three strands of work that collectively support STEM faculty at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in implementing, adapting and assessing evidence-based instructional strategies that support equitable outcomes. We will conduct workshops and provide resources supporting faculty in conducting scholarship of teaching and learning; and use the LASSO database to research potential bias in research-based assessments. The postdoctoral research position will span all aspects of the project.

We are willing to explore the possibility of a remote work arrangement. Our team spans multiple institutions (Texas State University, University of Colorado Denver, and Iowa State University).

Up to Three Renewable Lectureships, Ohio State University

 OSU Physics Lecturer Position

 

The Ohio State University Physics Department invites applications for up to three new Lecturer positions beginning August 15, 2022.   The position is full-time (9 or 12 month) with benefits and is initially a one-year appointment with the expectation that the position is renewable for continued 3-year appointments at the discretion of the department chair. The anticipated salary begins at $49,700, but may be higher depending on instructional assignments, and there is the long-term possibility of promotion to Senior Lecturer.

 

The department has recently begun a long-term process of renovation and redesign of its introductory physics courses, and the Lecturer will be engaged in this effort. Responsibilities will include teaching, TA training, and team collaboration on implementation, innovation, and development of evidence-based instructional materials and practices.  The department has a Physics Education Research group that is actively engaged in this effort.

 

Applications must include a CV, teaching statement, including a summary of knowledge and experience in evidence-based teaching practices and Physics Education Research (PER), and relevant teaching evaluations, combined into a single PDF.
