Illinois Institute of Technology seeks a distinguished scholar, teacher and leader as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Science Education in IIT’s College of Science and Letters. The Mathematics and Science Education Department (MSED) strongly emphasizes a research-based approach to discipline-specific teacher education. MSED provides preservice programs in secondary mathematics and science teaching, MS degrees for inservice teachers, and PhD degrees for mathematics/science educators. The department is currently comprised of five faculty members; two science educators, one informal/science educator, and two mathematics educators. With modest growth on this base, MSED is well positioned in science and informal education, and is poised to develop its mathematics and STEM education potential. IIT is an urban STEM focused institution with a mission to provide distinctive and relevant education in an environment of scientific, technological, and professional knowledge creation and innovation. All MSED faculty collaborate with teachers and schools, as well as colleagues throughout IIT, making it a unique and exciting place for research, teaching, and scholarship. Candidates for the position of department chair are expected to merit appointment as full professor and have a record of distinguished research and educational achievements.
