Lecture Demonstrator at University of Virginia

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Lecture Demonstrator position. Applicants will be responsible for designing, developing, providing and maintaining apparatus and software used in lectures to demonstrate physics principles from uniform motion to magnetic resonance and oversees support of graduate and undergraduate lecture courses taught in the Physics Department. This position supports the core educational mission of the Physics Department and works with faculty to improve the quality of teaching in lecture courses in the Physics Department. The position also coordinates with faculty to support education outreach programs in the Physics Department.  This position requires creativity and strong electronic and mechanical design and construction skills. The position also requires solid user support skills and a willing attitude.



A Master's degree in the appropriate field (physical science or engineering) or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience are required. Applicants must have two or more years of Physics Lecture Demo and/or practical laboratory experience with applicable principles and techniques ; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students as well as the ability to perform physics demonstrations in public, student and professional settings; demonstrated supervisory experience; demonstrated strong organizational, planning, and customer support skills are required. The applicant must possess an understanding of advanced undergraduate level Physics in the context of classroom, laboratory and education; knowledge of computers, electronics, multimedia equipment and other instructional technology; and extensive experience with Physics laboratory equipment including electronic instrumentation, computerized data interfaces, oscilloscopes, sensors, vacuum systems, and mechanical devices.
