The Position: The College of Natural Sciences at California State University, Chico is seeking a visionary and collaborative department chair and faculty member in the Department of Science Education. The candidate should be strongly committed to establishing a national model for science education; building university, school and community partnerships in science education, and dedicated to student success. This position is a .50 timebase academic-year chair, with a renewable 3-year appointment, and .50 academic year faculty teaching appointment. Position is contingent on funding. Minimum Qualifications: The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is an Ed.D. (or Ph.D.) in Science Education with extensive experience in science (e.g. master’s or undergraduate degree in a science discipline) or a doctorate (Ph.D.) in geosciences or physics and extensive experience in science education (e.g. master’s in education or science education).
Candidate must also show evidence of administrative leadership, superior quality teaching, a commitment to working with preservice and inservice teachers, and proven excellence in education research, publishing, external funding, or other scholarly activities in science education.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s in geosciences or physics; experience teaching middle or high school; experience mentoring future single subject science teachers; demonstrated leadership in design, implementation, and assessment of teacher professional development programs.
Responsibilities: This chair and tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of overseeing all administrative, programmatic, and assessment functions; developing new courses and programs for advising, recruiting, and supporting future middle and high school science teachers; bringing cohesion and vision to the many science education related professional development and outreach efforts that faculty in the College of Natural Sciences engage in; representing the Department and advocating for its needs at multiple venues locally, regionally, and nationally; mentoring faculty members; engaging in fundraising and grant writing to support these efforts; teaching science courses for undergraduates and preservice K-12 teachers in a manner that exemplifies best practices in science education. (Responsibilities do NOT include supervision of student teachers.)
Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience.
The Department: The Department of Science Education at CSU, Chico was established in 2007. In that brief time, the department has established a model of excellence in science teacher education in California. Faculty in the department have been awarded over $4 million in grant funding; redesigned the course sequence for future elementary teachers; developed a new majors program for future middle school science teachers, outdoor educators, and museum educators (with 38 majors and growing); cultivated a cross-disciplinary community of researchers engaged in discipline based education research; developed strong partnerships with the Gateway Science Museum and the Center for Math and Science Education; diversified our teacher professional development efforts; and expanded our early practicum experiences for future teachers.
