NYSCI MASTER Program Science Coach (Part-time)

Background: New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is New York City’s only hands-on science and technology center, with a mission to bring the excitement and understanding of science to children, families and teachers by galvanizing their curiosity and providing creative, participatory ways to learn.  Located in Queens, the most diverse county in the U.S., NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors annually.  Since our founding at the 1964-65 World’s Fair, NYSCI has earned an international reputation as a provider of teacher professional development, classroom resources and curricula, out-of-school programming and other educational initiatives. Our exhibitions, programs, and products are informed by strategies of engagement called Design-Make-Play (DMP). The defining characteristics of Design Make Play—open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement and delight—are the ingredients that inspire passionate STEM learners.
NYSCI has approximately 110 full-time and over 170 part-time staff-members.
Departmental Role: The Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Residency (MASTER) program is run in partnership by NYSCI, Hunter College of the City University of New York, New Visions for Public Schools, and the New York City Department of Education with funding from the National Science Foundation Math and Science Partnership. MASTER is a novel alternative certification teacher preparation program that is extensively clinically based. Instruction occurs around cycles of designing, teaching, reflecting, and refining inquiry-based lessons.  An extensive research program to study the impact of MASTER is also a part of the project.
Function: Candidates should have strong disciplinary content knowledge in one or more disciplines in science along with expertise in and commitment to science teacher education. Preference will be given to candidates with K-12 teaching experience. Candidates should be prepared to participate actively in working with the team to conceptualize this new teacher preparation program.
The Math and Science Teacher Education Residency Program (MASTER), a partnership among Hunter College, New Visions for Public Schools, and the New York Hall of Science, is accepting resumes and interviewing applicants to serve as the Induction Year Science Coach for adolescent education teacher candidates in science—biology, chemistry, and earth science.


Principal Responsibilities:
1.     Plan and facilitate biweekly Hunter College practicum seminar with MASTER students during their first full year of teaching (15 sessions total)
2.     Develop syllabus for Hunter College practicum seminar that aligns with MASTER program goals and Hunter College requirements and evaluate assigned work
3.     Provide support and resources for students as they prepare for New York State licensing exam (EdTPA)
4.     Observe up to 10 students a minimum of twice per semester as a Hunter College field supervisor
5.     Observe struggling students additional times as needed for a total of up to 30 observations across all teacher candidates per semester
6.     Conduct in-person post-observation meeting with each teacher candidate to provide constructive feedback on what was observed
7.     Communicate with administration and school-based mentors at hiring schools
8.     Utilize a suite of assessment tools to monitor teacher candidate progress
9.     Document teacher candidate progress; prepare reports after each observation and submit them to the teacher candidate and program staff
10.  Identify any struggling teacher candidates who require additional help and craft a plan for support
11.  Meet with program faculty and staff at least three times per year to share information and feedback as needed to support struggling students
12.  Contribute to the development of, as needed, and provide resources to support residents around effective, engaging inquiry-oriented science teaching
13.  Contribute to the development of resources to support the development of professional practices, such as video-supported reflection on teaching. 
14.  Contributes to the design of professional development supports for MASTER alumni
15.  Complete other tasks as assigned. 
Supervisory Responsibilities:  None anticipated 
Qualifications:
Education:    Masters degree and teacher certification in one of the following areas: biology, chemistry, Earth science
Experience:
·         Have at least 5 years teaching experience in NYC public school system (preferred)
·         Have at least 5 years coaching, instructional supervision, training, professional development, or mentoring experience (preferred)

Knowledge:           
·         Commitment to the philosophy and mission of MASTER and its partner organizations: NY Hall of Science, Hunter College of the City University of New York, and New Visions for Public Schools.
·         Strong grounding in current ideas about how people learn science and how to teach science accordingly
·         Strong science disciplinary content knowledge, in particular in the areas of biology, chemistry, and/or earth science
·         A commitment to improving teaching and learning in under-resourced schools with diverse students
·         Passion and knowledge about the use of technologies to support creative, engaged learning. Experience developing innovative and novel content for informal settings.
·         Ability to get ideas accepted and to guide a group or individual to accomplish the task.
·         Strong communications skills with the ability to express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications.
·         Demonstrate knowledge of:
a.     Pedagogical Content Knowledge in science
b.    Schools as organization
c.     Curriculum and assessment
d.    A range of instructional practices
e.     Quantitative and qualitative data analysis and the use of data to drive instruction
f.     Action research methods and the inquiry cycle
·         Be knowledgeable about the NYS secondary science curriculum, standards and assessment (e.g. NYS Regents examinations)
·         Experience serving diverse audiences.

Compensation: Commensurate with academic background and experience and pursuant to PSC-CUNY adjunct faculty rate.
Candidates are required to:
  • Be available to facilitate biweekly practicum seminar
  • Be available to observe teacher candidates at their school sites during school day
