Description
The Department of Physics at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites outstanding applicants for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions (retirement replacements) starting late August 2015.
For each position, we seek a broadly trained physicist who has the potential to establish a highly visible undergraduate research program and who will be passionate about teaching physics at every level of the curriculum in a primarily undergraduate, residential, liberal arts-centered institution. The successful candidates' training should qualify them to teach physics courses in the core curriculum and to develop innovative, upper-level courses that complement and diversify the department's offerings. Teaching responsibilities will also include rotation through introductory-level physics (usually calculus-based) and associated labs. We are especially interested in candidates whose research and pedagogy will connect and integrate physics with other disciplines and who have the potential to collaboratively contribute to interdisciplinary curricular and scholarly efforts within the School of Science and at the College.
An earned doctorate in physics, or a closely related field, is required. Although post-doctoral experience is preferred, other backgrounds will be considered; ABDs will be considered only if the degree will be completed prior to the start date.
1) Experimental Physics. This search is focused on an experimental physicist who works in one of the following areas (in order of preference): (a) condensed matter; (b) atomic/molecular; (c) nuclear/particle.
2) Physics Education. This search is focused on someone trained in, or with substantial experience in, physics education research. This faculty member will be strongly involved with our strong dual major in Physics and Secondary Education, as well as with implementing modern pedagogical techniques in courses at different levels.
Teaching and research are mutually supportive activities at TCNJ. Candidates should be strongly committed to the teacher-scholar model, to maintaining both high-quality teaching and an active and productive research program involving highly motivated undergraduates, and to seeking external funding consistent with this mission. Our expectation is that a substantial portion of the new faculty members' research will be performed on campus and will involve undergraduates. Faculty members also serve as academic advisors and have service responsibilities within the College. A research laboratory and start-up funds will be provided for both positions. The Physics Department, which currently has eight full-time, tenure-line faculty members and approximately 100 majors, is housed in a modern science complex that offers state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities and instrumentation. Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a highly selective institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. Emphasizing a residential experience for its approximately 6,500 undergraduates, TCNJ is one of Barron's 75 "Most Competitive" American colleges, and U.S. News & World Report's No. 1 public institution of its kind in the northern region of the country. The College also offers focused graduate programs in Nursing, Education, and English. TCNJ was awarded, in 2006, a Phi Beta Kappa chapter-an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and universities nationally. A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ's seven schools-Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science; and Science. TCNJ faculty members are teacher-scholars who share a commitment to liberal learning. TCNJ is located about an hour, by train, of New York City and Philadelphia. The College's campus is set on 289 tree-lined acres in suburban Ewing Township and is known for its natural beauty. TCNJ has 39 major buildings, including the 4th-best college library in the nation, according to the Princeton Review. For more information, visit www.tcnj.edu.
TCNJ is also proud to be the recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE grant, working to support the careers of women faculty members in STEM disciplines by developing systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women.
