3-Year Renewable STEM Master Teacher, George Washington University, DC

The George Washington University is a UTeach Institute replication site. The University is seeking candidates for appointment as a Research Instructor who will be known as a Master Teacher. The Master Teacher role is a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Research Instructor, to begin no later than June 1, 2015. The work of the Master Teacher is to support the preparation of a new generation of middle and secondary STEM teachers. Candidates appointed as Master Teachers are recruited specifically for the funded GW Teach program. In alignment with the UTeach program replication, the master teacher models effective classroom instruction, prepares undergraduate STEM majors to be future teachers, provides feedback and mentoring to students and manages the UTeach field experiences. The master teacher is expected to be knowledgeable about the needs of new educators and the realities of the challenges they face. He/she will serve as instructor, role model and informal on-demand advisor, and provide continuity for students through the program.
  Basic Qualifications: Applicants must: 1) have an undergraduate degree in a STEM area and a masters degree in Education in one of the STEM disciplines; 2) hold a public school teaching license in a STEM content area; 3) have at least five years of secondary public school teaching experience with a demonstrated ability to use best practices as evidenced by local, state or national awards; 4) have experience as a mentor teacher or coach; and 5) be a recognized leader in a school district.
  Period of Appointment
This non-tenure track faculty appointment is for 10 months (9-month academic year and the equivalent of 1 month summer.  The initial appointment term is three years with the possibility of renewal, Reappointment is contingent on funding and satisfactory performance.

 The Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development prepares teachers, specialists, and researchers through programs that are interdisciplinary and research-based. The department comprises eleven faculty members with expertise across the secondary education disciplines of English, foreign language, math, science, and social studies; as well as ESOL, literacy, and elementary education. Approximately 150 students are enrolled in the departments programs.
