Title of Position: Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of Physics

Typical Schedule: This is a full-time one year faculty position to begin July 2015 with possible conversion to tenure-track

Purpose: The Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of Physics is a full-time teaching position. The faculty member is required to teach courses in general physics and mathematics. The instructor will primarily focus their instruction on Physics and Mathematics courses tailored to undergraduate students pursuing interests in science or health career related professions. The faculty member is expected to manage and/or teach the laboratory sections associated with the Physics course. Duties related to math instruction would be associated with courses in College Algebra or Pre-Calculus and a two semester calculus sequence (Calculus I and II). As a faculty member of the Science and Math division, the professor will be invited to participate in academic program and curriculum design as the college expands its available tracks and degrees in the sciences. 

Essential Job Duties:
  • Responsible for teaching a two semester sequence in Physics (PHYS 151 and 152) for science majors.
  • Manage and teach laboratory sections for Physics (PHYS 151L and 152L, two semester sequence).
  • Design and implement curriculum for the courses of Physics and Mathematics for science majors.
  • Responsible for teaching two additional courses in mathematics: Pre-Calculus or College Algebra and Calculus (I and II).
  • Maintain regular office hours.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, and expectations as outlined in the faculty Handbook (available online).
  • Function as a faculty academic advisor as assigned.
  • Participate in the life of the college, particularly through committees or other available faculty and staff venues.
  • Meet regularly with the Division chair.
  • Participatte in academic program design and development.
  • Be a presence at important College events such as Welcome Weekend, Matriculation Ceremony and Opening Mass, faculty in-service days, faculty dinners, Honors Convocation, Arts Day, Senior Dinner, Bacculaureate Mass, and Commencement.
  • Ensure all teaching and advising practices are consistent with the Catholic, Holy Cross mission of the College.
  • Other responsibilities as may be assigned to meet the needs of the department and college.
Minimum Education, Skills and Ability:
  • Earned Doctorate (for appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor), ABD (for appointment as Instructor); have documented record of significant background teaching at the college level.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a connection to the Holy Cross College mission to educate the whole person in mind, body and spirit.
  • Positive work experience in a Catholic college environment preferred.
Working Conditions: 
All classes will be conducted on campus in a college classroom or laboratory. 

Physical Demands:
  • Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing; occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
