Department Chair an University of Colorado Denver

Endowed Chair at East Carolina University (NC)

The College of Education at East Carolina University is seeking applications and nominations for an eminent science education scholar for the position of Taft Chair in Science Education. Although preference will be given to science educators, individuals from all STEM disciplines will be considered. The Endowed Chair is a full-time faculty appointment, initially for a three-year period that is renewable. The selected candidate may be considered for appointment to a tenure-track, faculty position based on qualifications presented. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

The Elizabeth and Thomas F. Taft Sr. Endowed Chair in Science Education will be charged with developing and providing leadership in support of K-16 STEM Education in eastern North Carolina schools and at East Carolina University. A major role of the Endowed Chair will be to contribute to the development of and serve as Executive Director for a newly formed STEM Education Center that would strengthen the collaborative relationships among K-12 schools in the region and STEM university faculty in education, arts and sciences, technology and computer science, and medicine. In this regard, the goals of the STEM Education Center would include (a) establishing continuing relationships with STEM-oriented businesses and industries, K-16 educators, and community leaders in eastern North Carolina, (b) working collaboratively to secure funding from federal agencies and private foundations to improve the quality of K-16 STEM education and STEM workforce development and (c) promoting an educational environment in the region that nurtures STEM education for K-16 students, including preparation and instruction for future student employment in STEM professions or teacher preparation for K-12 STEM education. Additionally, the STEM Education Center would serve as a regional clearinghouse for STEM teacher professional development and for dissemination of information to the public regarding STEM Center activities.

Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree (PhD, EdD) in a STEM, STEM education, or related field from an accredited institution and/or equivalent exemplary experience; a distinguished record of scholarship in either a STEM or STEM education discipline; a record of obtaining funding in support of research/development projects in STEM or STEM education; and evidence of serving effectively in leadership roles involving collaboration with STEM or STEM education university faculty and/or STEM businesses and industries.

The University of Notre Dame seeks an entrepreneurially gifted leader to join the faculty of its Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI) to develop a new initiative to promote excellence in science and math education. This initiative will serve as an organizing hub to explore ways in which Notre Dame can make a distinctive contribution in this critical area, engaging its faculty – including members of the IEI, College of Science, College of Engineering, and College of Arts and Letters – and faculty across the country to focus on improving K-20 science and math education for all students. The main goals of the initiative will likely include but not be limited to: (a) innovative research of teaching and learning in science and mathematics; (b) effective and sustained professional development for K-20 teachers of science and mathematics; and (c) establishing a clearinghouse of curricular, instructional, and assessment resources for science and math teachers in all educational contexts, but with an emphasis on serving under-resourced Catholic schools.

JOB DESCRIPTION and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Candidates should have strong disciplinary content knowledge in one or more disciplines of science or mathematics along with expertise in and a commitment to teacher education and professional development. Applicants must have earned a doctorate in either a science or math discipline or in an education related field. The successful applicant will have a record of scholarly activity; experience writing and securing grants; teaching experience at the K-12 and university level; administrative experience; a history of working collaboratively on research and professional development projects; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; and a commitment to a culture of continuous improvement.

Candidates should be prepared to provide leadership in the development and implementation of a vision for the Initiative and will assume responsibility for building collaborative and resource capacity, creating an infrastructure for future work, and developing short and long-term strategic plans for improving K-20 science and math education. The successful candidate will also display the capacity to manage an active program of research and external funding for the Initiative as well as to develop collaborations among institutions, businesses, and schools to create programs that will most effectively improve science and math education for students in the United States, particularly in under-resourced Catholic schools.

Candidates should also be prepared to teach in the teacher education M.Ed. program sponsored by the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). ACE Service Through Teaching is a two-year masters program that seeks to develop a corps of highly motivated and committed educators to meet the needs of our country’s most underserved elementary and secondary schools. The program annually places over 170 college graduates in over 100 parochial schools throughout the United States. Teaching responsibilities will likely include content methods courses and content-specific assessment courses. Other teaching opportunities through the interdisciplinary undergraduate minor, Education, Schooling, and Society, or through courtesy appointments in the College of Science or College of Arts and Letters will be encouraged.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University seeks a postdoctoral research scientist in assessment and measurement. The postdoctoral fellow will join the research team of an NSF funded project to investigate the theoretical validity and practical implementation of learning progressions in science education. The project involves the development of assessments, and instructional materials to study two competing learning progressions in genetics at the high school level. The postdoctoral fellow will assist in the development and validation of multiple forms of assessments using the Evidence-Centered Design approach and multidimensional item response models. The successful candidate will be expected to become a full participant in the project (i.e. help organize research activities, collect and analyze data, present and publish articles that emerge from the research); as well as work with and assist in the mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students involved in the project.

Qualifications: PhD in assessment and measurement or related field at time of appointment. The ideal candidate will have expertise/experience in: (a) analysis of measurement data (expertise in IRT preferred), and b) development of assessments (expertise with the BEAR Assessment System preferred). Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with K-12 teachers and students are essential. The ideal candidate will be flexible, reliable and organized, with excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as be collaborative and participate cooperatively in close-knit research team.

Salary: Commensurate with candidate experience

Physics Specialist at James Madison University (VA)

James Madison University is seeking applicants for the position of Physics Specialist in the Science and Math Learning Center (SMLC). The position is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track faculty position with classroom teaching responsibilities in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, beginning August 2012. Instructor at California State University -- Chico

The Department of Physics at CSU Chico is seeking a qualified
instructor for non-calculus based introductory physics courses. We
recently lost a nearly full time instructor due to health reasons and
have employment available starting January 23, less than 3 weeks away.
Our department is focused on teaching and the instructor would find us
supportive of PER efforts – we currently have one tenured and one
tenure track faculty member with Ph.D. PER training. We confidently

Responsibilities:
This position is in the School of Science, Spring term 2012 (part-time temporary appointment).
Teaching responsibilities will consist of one upper division lecture course:
Analytical Mechanics, and one lower division laboratory for the second semester of introductory physics.

Experience and Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Physics is expected. Phd preferred.
Prior teaching experience in physics at the undergraduate level is preferred.

The position requires a person who has extensive experience and active involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. The College of Education (COE) has developed a Mathematics and Science Education Central (MSEC) as a part of the Technology and Learning Center (TLC). Thus, the responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to develop research projects and programs for the MSEC in cooperation with the director of the TLC and to work with the Orthwein Endowed Professor’s designated community partner, the Saint Louis Science Center (SLSC).
