Essential Functions:

The Physics Department Academic Assistant III position requires major responsibility and skills for high-enrollment laboratory courses in physics and astronomy. The Math, Science & Technology (MST) Department offers baccalaureate programs in applied health, biology, environmental science, exercise science and wellness, health management, health sciences, information technology management, medical laboratory science, and software engineering The department includes 16 full-time faculty members, 5 full-time staff members, and 29 adjunct faculty. Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in Physics Education in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. The successful candidate for the current position will work to develop and refine instructional materials for a new calculus-based electromagnetism course taught around project-based inquiry with computational physics. The successful candidate will also collect data on student learning as well as faculty practice in the course, and will assist in the analysis of the collected data.

Responsibilities include working in coordination with physics and education faculty to:
develop an integrated plan of course evaluation and innovation;

Applications are invited for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education in the Faculty of Education, to commence on September 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

Building on the cross-faculty double-degree partnership, the Faculties of Science and Education are making a joint Assistant Professor appointment in STEM Education. The appointee's tenure home would be in the Faculty of Education. The aim of the position would be to research, inform and enhance the teaching of STEM in the university setting, and would align with the promotion of STEM education, as prioritized by the Chief Executive in the 2015 Policy Address. Women in STEM education would be a potential sub-theme within this initiative.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in one of the core sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), and a Ph.D. degree in Science Education or Science. They should have demonstrated interest and expertise in informal learning, and have a strong commitment to Knowledge Exchange/community engagement. The appointee will be expected to work with colleagues in both faculties (and the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning) to develop a school/community engagement agenda, aimed at promoting careers in STEM/Science Education, and at popularizing science among the wider community. He/She will teach on the Bachelor of Education & Bachelor of Science (BEd&BSci) double degree programme (contributing to both faculties); work with Education/Science colleagues to develop Common Core Courses and an interdisciplinary Minor; engage in cross-faculty research; and take up administrative responsibilities as required.
