Essential Functions:
The Department of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis seeks a full time (12 month) lecturer, beginning in Spring 2017. The Physics Department Academic Assistant III position requires major responsibility and skills for high-enrollment laboratory courses in physics and astronomy. Duties include all aspects of teaching lab management (lower and upper division), coordination with faculty for all labs, including  preparation and revision of lab manuals, trouble-shooting and development of teaching lab experiments, training and supervision of teaching assistants, and development of grading policy and teaching assistants (TAs) evaluation methods. A Ph.D., or equivalent, in physics or astronomy with teaching lab and research experience is required. The Math, Science & Technology (MST) Department offers baccalaureate programs in applied health, biology, environmental science, exercise science and wellness, health management, health sciences, information technology management, medical laboratory science, and software engineering The department includes 16 full-time faculty members, 5 full-time staff members, and 29 adjunct faculty. The MST Department has shared designated research laboratories for collaborations between students and faculty including an immersive visualization, software programming, and 3-D areas as well as up to date science laboratories and classrooms. Students and faculty also have access to a high performance liquid chromatograph; gas chromatograph; DNA sequencer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer among other essential equipment. Our new Wellness Center (grand opening in October) houses a fully functional exercise science and wellness teaching laboratory with equipment and software to monitor physiological parameters. The new exercise and wellness faculty position will bridge a strong connection between the MST Department and the Wellness Center and provide new research opportunities for students.

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in Physics Education in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. The successful candidate for the current position will work to develop and refine instructional materials for a new calculus-based electromagnetism course taught around project-based inquiry with computational physics. The successful candidate will also collect data on student learning as well as faculty practice in the course, and will assist in the analysis of the collected data.

Responsibilities include working in coordination with physics and education faculty to:
develop an integrated plan of course evaluation and innovation;
develop valid assessments of student learning in this course;
participate in and supervise the development of instructional routines, materials, and practices for improving student learning in this course, including teaching the course;
publish assessment tools and findings in Physics Education journals; and
pursue a research agenda related to your own personal interests..

Building on the cross-faculty double-degree partnership, the Faculties of Science and Education are making a joint Assistant Professor appointment in STEM Education. The appointee's tenure home would be in the Faculty of Education. The aim of the position would be to research, inform and enhance the teaching of STEM in the university setting, and would align with the promotion of STEM education, as prioritized by the Chief Executive in the 2015 Policy Address. Women in STEM education would be a potential sub-theme within this initiative.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in one of the core sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), and a Ph.D. degree in Science Education or Science. They should have demonstrated interest and expertise in informal learning, and have a strong commitment to Knowledge Exchange/community engagement. The appointee will be expected to work with colleagues in both faculties (and the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning) to develop a school/community engagement agenda, aimed at promoting careers in STEM/Science Education, and at popularizing science among the wider community. He/She will teach on the Bachelor of Education & Bachelor of Science (BEd&BSci) double degree programme (contributing to both faculties); work with Education/Science colleagues to develop Common Core Courses and an interdisciplinary Minor; engage in cross-faculty research; and take up administrative responsibilities as required.
