Senior Lecturer, Vanderbilt, Nashville TN

Senior Lecturer in Physics
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Vanderbilt University invites applications for the position of Senior Lecturer.
The successful candidate will assume instructional duties assigned by the Chair, including but not limited to teaching in our calculus-based Introductory Physics for Life Scientists (IPLS) course. Additional duties will include serving as the IPLS course coordinator. The Department has already instituted significant reforms in this course – in accord with best practices from physics education research – and is seeking an individual willing to build on this foundation and take a leadership role in making this IPLS course effective and equitable for students.

Vanderbilt University has a strong institutional commitment to fostering excellence through an academically and culturally diverse community of scholars. For example, the Fisk-Vanderbilt Masters-to-PhD program was founded in the Physics & Astronomy department and has become a national model for the recruitment, retention, and training of talented underrepresented minority scholars in physics and astronomy.

The ideal candidate has experience with and is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion in teaching, mentoring and service. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in physics or in a related field and have a demonstrated commitment to effective teaching of diverse undergraduates. Experience in physics education research is preferred; familiarity with this research is required.

The Senior Lecturer appointment will be nontenure track, with an initial appointment for one year, renewable in three-year terms subject to satisfactory performance.
The teaching load is 3-3, with a potential one course reduction per semester for administrative work. The appointment will begin at the start of the 2020-2021 academic year. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Applications should include
(1) the candidate’s curriculum vitae,
(2) a statement of teaching philosophy, and
(3) a statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to diversity through research, teaching, mentoring and/or service.
These materials should be submitted directly to http://apply.interfolio.com/74006 .
Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be uploaded via the same link.

Review of applications will begin March 1 and continue until the position is filled.
