Rutgers
University, Graduate School of Education (GSE), seeks qualified candidates to
join our nationally and internationally recognized Physics Education/Urban
Social Justice Teacher Education program as an Assistant Teaching Professor of
Science Education (Non-Tenure Track) in the Department of Learning and
Teaching. Rutgers GSE recently launched our Urban Social Justice Program, which
aims to develop a generation of teachers with the knowledge, skills, and
dispositions to teach and advocate for all students and learn from the
communities they serve. Rutgers Physics Teacher Education Program is an
award-winning program that has been producing physics teachers that remain in
the profession for over 15 years. It focuses on graduating physics and physical
science teachers who are deeply versed in their subject matter, skilled in
student-centered inquiry-oriented teaching methods and are active members of
the professional learning community.
The
successful candidate will assume an active role as a full-time member of the
Science Education program and the GSE community.
Responsibilities
will include
·
Coordinate
physics and physical science teacher education program, recruit and mentor students
in the program and teach 18 credits of physics/physical science methods or
other education courses per calendar year.

Conduct
research on the effectiveness of the program for accreditation purposes.
·
Work
with colleagues in the GSE and Rutgers science departments to establish middle
school science teacher preparation program, develop science methods courses for
this program and teach 3 credits of science methods courses in it.
·
Work
with colleagues in the GSE to strategically align physics/physical science and life
science teacher education programs with the urban social justice mission of the
GSE through program development and grant writing.
·
Maintain
and further develop the existing community of physics educators – graduates of
the program and expand it to include teachers from GSE Community School Partnership
Network.
·
Engage
in general service to the department of Learning and Teaching.
·
Engage
in general service to the GSE.
Education and Experience
Expectations:
We seek
candidates for the Assistant Professor of Teaching position with an earned
doctorate in education from an accredited university in Physics or Science
Education and who have:

An
undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy or physical science.
·
At
least 3-5 years successful teaching experience in high school science including
physics in public schools preferably in urban settings
·
Working
knowledge of and experience using Next Generation Science Standards
Successful
candidates will demonstrate evidence of commitment to addressing diversity,
equity, and social justice issues in science education/higher education. Our
school and university are especially interested in applications from
individuals who are members of groups that have been and still are
underrepresented in university faculty positions and in the field of
physics/physical science. Salary and terms of appointment are commensurate with
qualifications.
