Summary of Position: The Instructional Laboratory Specialist will organize, maintain, and upgrade instructional labs and demonstrations, work with instructors to coordinate laboratories and demonstrations, maintain departmental computers, instruct and coordinate graduate teaching assistants, deliver instruction of introductory (400-level) courses and support the development of new instructional materials.

Acceptable min level of education: Masters

Acceptable min level of experience: 2 years


Duties / Responsibilities 

Laboratory Management: Manage all Physics Department teaching laboratories, including organization, repairs and maintenance, and upgrades of laboratory hardware. Coordinate all Laboratory experiments
and classroom demonstrations with  course instructors, including setting up,
organization and maintenance, and upgrades of demonstration hardware. Develop new laboratory experiments 
and manuals as needed. Coordinate  with the Equipment Committee to assess needs and make purchases for teaching lab equipment. Create and  maintain a user-friendly online inventory of demonstrations and lab equipment. 


Support of Classroom Instruction/Teaching:  Coordinate the scheduling and training of graduate Teaching
Assistants (TAs) and undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) for introductory courses. Supervise a team of undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) including recruitment and schedule management. Develop new classroom demonstrations as  needed, and support active learning in classes by working with instructors.  Possibility to teach introductory (first year) physics courses. 


Department IT Support: Manage all departmental teaching resources including computers, computer networks and peripherals, overseeing purchase, set up and maintenance. This includes coverage of all laboratory (instructional) computers.

Other minimum qualifications: Master's degree in Physics or related field 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of related experience which includes a combination of secondary/higher education teaching in an appropriate scientific area, supervision, and computer management. Experience in computer networking and management (Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems).
