Description of the Department or Unit

Appalachian State University is a public university with campuses in Boone and Hickory, North Carolina. Known as AppState it was started in 1899 as a teacher’s college and today has more than 20,000 students enrolled.

AppState provides over 150 bachelor’s degrees and 70 graduate degree programs including two doctoral programs. In the Physics and Astronomy department we have dedicated faculty and staff that support student participation with state-of-the-art research laboratories, observatories and other educational programs that will enhance our majors’ learning experience.

We have over 160 undergraduate majors and over 30 graduate students. Our department is committed to excellent physics teaching and offers a B.S. in Physics with a concentration in Secondary Education and a Physics minor for Secondary Education majors in addition to several other options. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates must have a strong commitment to excellence in education and are expected to develop a research program that engages undergraduate and masters students and has the potential to attract and maintain external funding for scholarship. Responsibilities will include teaching physics and physics education courses, advancing physics education research, and service activities including advising and mentoring of physics secondary education majors. Some start-up funds will be available to the successful candidate.

Candidates are expected to:

Teach a standard teaching load of 18 semester hours per year for research-active faculty

Establish and maintain a program of research or other scholarly activities that may include applying for external funding

Participate in service activities that may include advising students, curriculum planning and assessment, working with professional organizations, and other activity needed for faculty governance at the department, college, and university levels

Support the physics education community through mentoring pre-service physics education students, evaluating student teachers, and providing professional development to physics education professionals

Foster and develop relationships with the local school systems and other stakeholders

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Our primary mission is providing instruction of the highest quality in physics and astronomy to undergraduate and graduate students at UNC-CH. Training in physics is fundamental among the natural sciences because it provides understanding of the forces governing the structure of matter, from subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe.

This instructional mission is supported by a strong managerial, administrative, and technical staff. Duties of these employees range from budget planning and management for the numerous research grants held by faculty in the department to maintaining course and student records. These activities are usually accomplished in a standard 40- hour week schedule.

Position Summary

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a faculty teaching position. The opening is for a candidate at the Teaching Assistant Professor level with a target start date of fall semester 2025. The position is for an initial term of three (3) years and is renewable upon review. We seek a dynamic person to teach undergraduate physics, primarily at the introductory level in a large-enrollment setting, using pedagogy informed by physics and astronomy education research. The successful candidate will also be expected to serve as a course coordinator to manage a team of faculty and teaching assistants for one of the introductory courses, join other faculty members in the department engaged in similar efforts, and participate in obtaining grant support for curricular and pedagogical improvements.

Required qualifications include a PhD in Physics (or a closely related field) by the start date and a background in physics and/or astronomy education research and/or experience in teaching at the college level using research-validated pedagogy.

The Department of Physics at the University of Florida (UF) seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, nine-month, term-limited, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Lecturer (working title: Instructional Assistant Professor) to begin on August 16, 2025, renewable annually with funding secured for three years. 

The successful candidate will join 52 department faculty, including 2 instructional faculty. The primary teaching duties will be to work as a part of a team teaching over 5,000 students who take introductory physics classes at UF each year, both in-person and online. Teaching assignments will include both in-person and online courses. Duties will include serving as coordinator of the department’s online course offerings, overseeing the systematic improvement of lecture and/or lab courses for online delivery, and serving as the liaison to UF’s online programs. Depending on the applicant’s background and departmental needs, duties may also include teaching and making programmatic improvements in our face-to-face undergraduate large courses, or other areas of undergraduate physics instruction. Job Description:

The Department of Physics at the University of Florida (UF) seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, nine-month, renewable, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Lecturer (working title: Instructional Assistant Professor) to begin on August 16, 2025. 

The successful candidate will join 52 department faculty, including 2 instructional faculty. The primary teaching duties will be to work as a part of a team teaching over 5,000 students who take introductory physics classes at UF each year, both in-person and online. Depending on the applicant's background and departmental needs, involvement in other areas of physics instruction may be possible. The Lecturer will be expected to help with programmatic improvements in our large course instruction by, for example, training teaching and learning assistants, applying pedagogy from physics education research, including more active learning environments, or implementing strategies to encourage and maintain participation from groups underrepresented in physics and STEM fields. Although most of our introductory physics courses are taught in person, some amount of online teaching will likely be required. The Lecturer may also contribute to the undergraduate physics program through academic and career advising, establishing and/or promoting experiential learning activities, and engaging with the broader community with physics education outreach. The usual teaching assignment for instructional faculty is a 3-course assignment for each semester, which can be modified subject to overall assigned duties and responsibilities.

TWO Instructional Assistant Professors, Ole Miss MS

 Instructional Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy

Position Description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for two Instructional Assistant Professor (IAP) appointments starting in August 2025. These are long-term positions with a track for promotion to Associate and full Instructional Professor. A Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field will be required by the start of employment. The department is committed to effective undergraduate teaching. We seek candidates with a passion for teaching, and experience in evidence-based approaches to teaching physics and/or astronomy at the college level is required.

Teaching duties include up to three courses per semester. Both IAPs will teach introductory courses with some opportunities to teach upper-division courses. Responsibilities will also include some coordination of the associated labs and supervision of lab TAs.
 
The person hired in the IAP Physics position will primarily teach physics courses.
The person hired in the IAP Astronomy position will primarily teach astronomy courses.
 
The successful applicants are expected to be an integral part of the department and participate in service to the department, university, and the wider community. Service opportunities include outreach activities, mentoring graduate teaching assistants, and building student community through undergraduate advising, mentorship, and student clubs.
