Lecturer in Applied Physics, Harvard

Director of Citizen Science, Adler Planetarium, Chicago IL

The Citizen Science Department at the Adler Planetarium seeks to engage everyone with real science, whether online or in person. The department at the Adler Planetarium is home to the Zooniverse, including a development team who design and build novel citizen science projects and, with colleagues, the infrastructure that supports them. They have played a leading role in making Zooniverse the world’s largest and most successful collection of citizen science projects.

The Adler Planetarium is seeking an individual to lead our innovative Citizen Science initiatives. As a member of the Adler’s Executive team, the Director of Citizen Science will work alongside established and new partners to create and sustain a platform which supports a diverse suite of citizen science projects and to increase the profile of the museum in the arena of engaging the public in doing science. Along with the Technical and Education Leads, the director will manage the web development and education efforts in Citizen Science, which includes development of Zooniverse projects in collaboration with the University of Oxford. He/she will help establish the planetarium as a world-leading center for the inclusion of volunteers in scientific research, and will seek out funding opportunities and prepare proposal applications for grants that can support the Adler’s citizen science work.

Responsibilities:
  • Strategic planning and grant writing in collaboration with the Technical and Education Leads, including seeking our new opportunities and building relationships locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Manage and work with team leads to oversee staff and day-to-day department activities, and grant and project budgets. Ensuring staff have resources and support to meet project goals.
  • Regular communication with external Zooniverse collaborators and partners, in particular with the University of Oxford web development team.

Education and Experience

FIUTeach is searching for two Master Teachers for the new FIUTeach program. FIUTeach is a replication of the mature, successful UTeach model for recruiting, preparing, and inducting secondary science and mathematics teachers into teaching careers in partnership with Miami Dade County Public Schools. The Master Teacher is the primary point of contact for undergraduate students in the FIUTeach program and will teach initial courses in the teacher education program as well as supervising students in elementary, middle and high school settings. The individuals selected as Master Teachers must have a master’s degree in science or mathematics or in science/math education and a minimum of five years of experience as a secondary classroom teacher in science or math. Master Teachers will be hired as Clinical Faculty and will report to program co-directors and work closely with the Project Director. Responsibilities:
Persons appointed as clinical faculty members in the FIUTeach program are non-tenured faculty who will be hired into the STEM Transformation Institute. An appointment to this position will primarily involve participation in teaching and/or supervising undergraduate students in courses and experiences related to field-based teacher development. Primary responsibilities include teaching field-based courses students take in their pursuit of certification, identifying qualified local public school teachers who can serve as mentor teachers, working with local area public school teachers who act as mentors for the students, working with the College of Education Field Placement Office to coordinate field placements and student teaching sites for students, and conducting field observations of the students. Additional duties will include student mentoring and other programmatically related tasks.

Period of Appointment:
This non-tenure-track faculty appointment consists of a 9-month instructional and a 1-month summer administrative appointment, for a total of 10 months.  Initial appointment is for 3 years. Additional instructional-related duties will be assigned in order to provide persons appointed in this title with the appropriate workload.

The University of Minnesota Physics Education Research and Development Group seeks a postdoctoral Research Associate to help continue its development and assessment of web-based instructor-customizable computer problem-solving coaches for physics.

Responsibilities include planning and co-supervision of graduate and undergraduate students, data collection and analysis, giving presentations related to the project, and some computer programming. Opportunities for independent research in Physics Education and teaching physics classes will also be available.

We seek applicants that have an interest in physics education research (PER), particularly in problem solving who are familiar with computer programing. Experience in object-oriented programming and/or database use is a plus.
