Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

·         Teaches 12 credit hours per semester of undergraduate courses in Physics and related subjects.

·         Prepares syllabi, instruction materials, coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluates students and maintains the highest possible standards of instruction.

·         Engages in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.

·         Actively serves on university committees.

·         Actively participates in institutional meetings

·         Assists with the development of curriculum

Required Qualifications

·         Master’s degree in Physics, or a closely-related area from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline.

·         Demonstrated potential for, or a record of, achievement in teaching lower division Physics courses.

·         Must meet the University and College criteria for the appointment to the level of Instructor I.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·         Master’s degree in Physics from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.

·         Experience with management of the lower division Physics curriculum, especially in connection with standards, scheduling, staffing, and policy implementation.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·         Experience with and commitment to the use of instructional technology, a willingness to cultivate an interdisciplinary perspective; and a demonstrated commitment to professional development.

·         Experience or commitment to the use of technology in distance learning & university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued scholarship and service to the school and university.

Job Overview

The College of Arts & Sciences within the University of Cincinnati seeks candidates for three tenure-track positions at the level of Assistant Professor in discipline-based educational research (DBER) in any of the following: Biological Sciences, English, Physics, Psychology, and Romance & Arabic Languages and Literature (RALL). Each position will reside in the department of its respective discipline. The positions are part of an initiative to create a university-wide institute for research on teaching and learning, and the new hires will join an existing cadre of faculty.

The College of Arts & Sciences seeks individuals to join our drive to engage students and maximize learning in our classrooms, with a particular focus on student success and retention in our gateway courses. Candidates will participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary research teams, and develop and evaluate new models of instruction, embrace online learning, and contribute to the Discipline-based Education Research (DBER) and teaching activities of their department, college, and beyond. The successful candidate will primarily teach courses at the undergraduate level in their specialty area, work with other faculty across the college to enhance their teaching practices, and engage in discipline-based education and pedagogical research. The candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program that provides support and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate will address the needs of a diverse student population, including differences in ethnicity, race, first-generation college status, accessibility, and academic preparation, through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Note: For a possible Physics DBER position, we are specifically looking for applicants that have an interest in the interplay between physics learning and mathematics education and who would be willing to serve as a bridge between the math and physics departments.

Minimum Requirements

As stated above, applicants in the following disciplines are sought: Biological Sciences, English, Physics, Psychology, and Romance & Arabic Languages and Literatures (RALL). Prior to the effective date of appointment candidates must have either a Doctorate in their primary discipline, meaning one of the aforementioned disciplines or a closely related field, or a Doctorate in Education with a Master’s degree in their primary discipline.

Responsibilities
Teaching responsibilities will primarily be in the year-long General Physics sequence teaching student-centered studio physics sections. The sequence uses modeling physics instruction with activities adapted and implemented for an “Introductory Physics for the Life Sciences” (IPLS) approach.
Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Physics or a closely-related field is required by time of hire. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Physics are preferred. 
 
Individuals with experience and/or training in physics education research, guided inquiry techniques (such as modeling instruction), and/or teaching introductory physics for life and health science majors are especially encouraged to apply.

    The Department of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenured position at the Associate Professor level with a focus in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ( STEM ) Education, with primary responsibilities in the Learning Sciences program.

    The Learning Sciences program offers MS and PhD degrees in Learning and Cognition, as well as master’s degrees in Secondary Science Education, Statistics, Instructional Design and Educational Technology. Learning Sciences faculty also contribute to undergraduate teacher education in elementary and secondary methods in science, mathematics, and technology education, as well as general survey courses in learning and research. Faculty conduct basic or applied research in their area of expertise and provide support to the graduate programs across the department, as well as to the undergraduate teacher education degree programs in the College of Education.

    Position Rank: This is a nine-month, full-time tenured position. The appointment is at the rank of Associate Professor.

    Applicant Required Qualifications: This position requires an earned doctorate in Educational Psychology, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Engineering Education, Learning Sciences, Psychology, or a related field. Candidates should have an established program of theory-driven research that studies the intersection of STEM Education with learning and cognition.

    We invite candidates whose research programs focus on either formal (K-16 learning environments) or informal STEM learning environments, and we are open to types of research design and areas of methodological expertise (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods).

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Strong evidence of and potential for collaboration to sustain and expand existing partnerships.
    • Evidence of leadership in obtaining external funding and publishing works related to individual research agenda.
    • Experience in interdisciplinary and collaborative research in STEM Education.

    Position Responsibilities:

    Responsibilities of the position will include:

    1. Develop and sustain a program of scholarly research related to STEM Education and closely related fields.
    2. Design, teach, and coordinate core courses at the undergraduate or graduate level in critical areas of STEM education (i.e., science education methods, math education methods, engineering education, and/or technology education).
    3. Participate and provide leadership in interdisciplinary STEM education initiatives across the College of Education and at the University level.
    4. Advise and supervise graduate student master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.
    5. Serve as an organizer, collaborator and/or principal investigator for research and service proposals to appropriate national agencies and foundations.
    6. Provide appropriate levels of service at the program, college, and university levels, as well as to the community and profession.

    Full-time, tenure-track assistant professor, beginning September 2022.     Responsibilities:

    • Ph.D. in physics, astronomy or closely related field, OR in science education together with upper-division or graduate-level course work in physics.
