COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: 

Salary Range: $31.19- $37.93  per hour (21/22 Classified Salary Schedule); maximum initial placement at $34.40  per hour (placement within this range is based on assessment of previous experience as documented in application materials).

Leave/Holiday time: Full-time classified members earn 8 hours of sick leave and start off accruing 8.0 hours of vacation for each month worked (accrual rate increases after third year of employment and rates are pro-rated for part-time employees). Employees are also compensated for holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year, pro-rated for part-time employees).

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Chemistry and Physics department of Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an energetic, detail oriented individual with demonstrated organizational, technical, and laboratory skills to join an outstanding team of faculty, staff and administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our District, our community, and most importantly to our students.  Under general supervision, performs preparatory work to assist faculty in the instruction of college level students; demonstrates theoretical or practical subject matter in a science laboratory setting; performs technical duties in the operation and maintenance of science laboratories and equipment; follows established policies concerning use and disposal of hazardous or bio-hazardous materials/wastes; and performs related work as required. 

 

This is a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE), 238 day, classified position. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday with work hours based on course schedule which may include some evening hours.  This position is contingent upon funding and Board approval.  

 

SCOPE:

The Science Laboratory Instructional Assistant provides technical and instructional support to faculty and students in one or more laboratories within a college science department or programs such as Chemistry, Life Sciences, Engineering, Physics, Earth and Space Sciences, Agriculture, Natural Resources, etc. The Science Laboratory Instructional Assistant has an in-depth knowledge in the science area to which assigned.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Science Laboratory Instructional Assistant is distinguished from the Science Laboratory Technician by the instructional focus and assistance to faculty in instruction.

 

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Chemistry & Physics at Santa Rosa Junior College is currently staffed by 11 full-time and several adjunct instructors, all of whom have great enthusiasm for teaching. Support staff include a Coordinator of Science Labs and Science Laboratory Instructional Assistant. High educational standards are maintained and primary emphasis is placed on quality undergraduate instruction. High standards for environmental health and safety are diligently maintained. Together we offer day and evening classes at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses.

 

The Physics Program's primary mission is to provide physics course work and related academic training required for transfer students in science, engineering and pre-professional majors. The program's secondary mission is to foster the scientific and technological literacy of the total student population through general education and enrichment classes and activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•   Sets up laboratory for science demonstrations and exercises; distributes and arranges equipment, models and other related materials; issues materials and equipment for experiments; assists in the operation and maintenance of instructional labs; participates in the planning and implementation of exercises and experiments; implements new or modified policies and procedures; prepares special instructions for non-routine and complex assignments.

•   Keeps up to date with new developments in the assigned science area; consults with instructors to modify and incorporate changes into laboratory activities.

•   Confers with students regarding classroom or laboratory progress; tutors students individually and in groups in problem areas related to instructional subject matter.

•   Administers and scores laboratory exams and/or quizzes; confers with instructors and students regarding student test scores; maintains test records, laboratory attendance records and other related records.

•   Prepares reports on classroom or laboratory activities and/ or student progress.

•   May order or arrange for the ordering of lab supplies and equipment; receives, stores, issues and maintains lab supplies and equipment.

•   Prepares, tests, adjusts, modifies, maintains, calibrates and operates a variety of laboratory equipment; troubleshoots problems and makes minor repairs and adjustments as necessary or arranges for service repair.

•   May prepare reagents and solutions specific to the science area assigned, using established standards.

•   Demonstrates the safe and proper use of laboratory equipment, hazardous or bio-hazardous materials to students.

•   Implements departmental policies and procedures to comply with Federal, State and local hazardous materials, health and safety and hazardous waste regulations; enforces laboratory safety procedures, routinely inspects and/or tests safety equipment and supplies; responds to laboratory emergencies including injuries and spills of hazardous or bio-hazardous materials.

•   May attend departmental and instructional meetings; organizes special events and completes special projects as assigned.

•   May direct the work of student employees.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Specific subject matter and theoretical principles of the science area to which assigned; materials, tools and equipment, supplies and laboratory methods, practices and techniques used in the science area assigned; materials and equipment used in the repair, calibration and maintenance of technical laboratory equipment; care and maintenance of living organisms if required; curating and maintenance of botanical, zoological and microbial collections if required; current and developing environmental health and safety regulations and advances in the science area assigned; principles, practices, and environmental health and safety regulations necessary to properly use and dispose of hazardous or bio-hazardous materials or work with laboratory equipment; standard office productivity software; principles of record keeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

This classification requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business.  Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

May be required to possess certain licenses or certificates (e.g., valid Class C California driver's license, CPR, First Aid certificate), or possess proof of training in areas relevant to subject matter to which assigned.

FT (3-year renewable) Assistant Professor, University of Virginia

The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia (UVa), College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor, General Faculty. The Department has a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning of Physics and the successful candidate will be expected to strengthen that commitment. The successful candidate will be ready to employ active learning methods in teaching introductory physics courses, such as collaborative problem solving, flipped classroom, game-based learning, to give a few examples. We particularly welcome applicants with interests and experience in modern pedagogy methods which emphasize student participation.

 

The position is non-tenure track with three-year contracts that are renewable on successful review, contingent on funding. The Opportunity

The Colorado School of Mines seeks a full-time research assistant and instructor to work with an NSF grant-funded project called Get the Facts Out: Changing the Conversation around STEM teaching and Teach@Mines. Get the Facts Out is an innovative partnership led by Mines that includes the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Chemical Society, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, behavior change researchers, teacher educators, and several colleges and universities which serve as study sites.

The grant aims to tackle misperceptions about the teaching profession with the goal of increasing the fraction of physics, chemistry, and math majors that choose to pursue middle and high school teaching as a career. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to teach mathematics or science methods courses to preservice teachers in the Teach@Mines program.

The research assistant will be part of a very collaborative, reliable, and geographically diverse group that meets weekly. The team works on a range of projects including a large-scale longitudinal research study of student and faculty perceptions of the teaching profession, ongoing development and testing of STEM teacher recruitment resources, and management and support of a national community of faculty who are working to share accurate information about the teaching profession with students. The group is led by Wendy Adams, Associate Professor of Physics at Mines and David May, GFO Project Manager.

Responsibilities

Research

  • Conduct research on perceptions of teaching as a profession, including longitudinal analyses of perceptions through surveys, site visits, interviews, and focus groups
  • Collaborate with other research assistants/consultants, and report findings through peer-reviewed publications
  • Assist with developing and submitting research grant proposals.

Teacher preparation

  • Teach mathematics or science methods courses to preservice teachers
  • Conduct teacher recruitment activities at Mines including presentations and advising
  • Assist with the application process for state approval of Mines’ teacher education program
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics, science education, or math education by employment start date
  • Previous pedagogical experience, with a post-secondary degree in education research or demonstrated interest in education research
  • Excellent communications skills, strong quantitative skills, the ability to work collaboratively, the self-discipline to work independently, and multi-task

Postdoc, University of Pittsburgh

 Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) at the University of Pittsburgh. The postdoc will join Drs. Brian Galla (Applied Developmental Psychology, LRDC, Pitt), Timothy Nokes-Malach (Psychology, LRDC, Pitt), Melanie Good (Physics, Pitt), and Eric Kuo (Physics, Illinois) in a NSF-funded project that tests the effect of mindfulness training to reduce psychological threat and enhance motivation and learning in undergraduate introductory physics. The postdoc will be involved in all aspects of the project and will help lead efforts to publish results of the research. The position starts in summer 2022 and is for two years.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD in psychology, learning sciences, or a related field (e.g., STEM education). Those with a strong background and interest in one or more of the following areas will be highly competitive: mindfulness (e.g., stress reduction, emotion regulation), learning and cognition (e.g., metacognition, problem solving), and motivation (e.g., self-regulation, mindsets). Advanced training in experimental design, statistics (e.g., ANOVA, regression, multi-level models) and mixed methods (e.g., interviews, ecological momentary assessment) is preferred but not required.

The LRDC is a leading center for the study of learning and education. Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Physics

The Physics Program in the College of Engineering & Science at the University of Detroit Mercy invites candidates to apply for two available full-time tenure track faculty positions. Physics faculty have opportunities to collaborate with faculty in other disciplines and at partner institutions through the BUILD grant and other exciting initiatives.

A successful candidate would be one that has a strong interest in implementing best practices in teaching pedagogy including evidence-based teaching and assessment strategies. In addition, we seek an educator who is also an enthusiastic teacher-scholar committed to supporting a diverse population of students, and who can enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities will include teaching introductory physics lectures and laboratory courses, as well as   other courses, based on the faculty member’s area of expertise and on the need to complement or expand current offerings in the program.

The candidate should have a proposed research agenda appropriate for a primarily undergraduate institution. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability and interest to pursue external funding and to disseminate results in peer-reviewed publications and conferences. Pedagogical research is encouraged.

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Physics or closely related discipline by the time of appointment.

One-Year Physics Education VAP, CSU-Chico

This position also carries responsibilities for teaching SCED 321W: Scientific Inquiry. This course engages students in inquiry into topics that span the scientific disciplines. Skills addressed include experimental design, modeling, representation, dissemination of results, and critique of peers' work. Content topics include light, color, and sound, from biological, chemical and physics perspectives. This is a full-time, one year appointment.
