FIU's STEM Transformation Institute is dedicated to advancing research and educational change on evidence-based instructional practices, utilizing FIU as a laboratory for the future of STEM, as over 80% of FIU's 54,000 students come from traditionally underrepresented groups. The Institute currently hosts 15 discipline-based education research faculty in 9 STEM departments and 25 staff/postdoctoral researchers that carry out multidisciplinary collaborative work across the Colleges of Arts, Sciences & Education and Engineering & Computing. Hallmark programs include a Learning Assistant (LA) program that impacts well over 13,000 student enrollments in 10 STEM disciplines each semester; Modeling Instruction at the high school and college levels; and numerous HHMI- and NSF-funded research projects. The STEM Transformation Institute has secured over $40 million dollars in government and private funding to carry out its mission.
The STEM Transformation Institute is seeking applications for multiple postdoctoral positions in STEM Education or Discipline-Based Education research. The primary responsibilities of STEM Transformation Institute post-doctoral fellows vary depending on the project and the individual's interests, but may include: conducting education research, developing evidence-based curricular materials, integrating teaching experience with research activities to facilitate implementation of evidence-based practices, and/or working with faculty and other stakeholders to facilitate adoption of active learning instructional practices. These experiences will prepare candidates for various career paths including academic tenure track positions.
Candidates for these positions should have completed their PhD in a STEM education research field or in a STEM field with significant interest in developing education research expertise. The ideal candidates will have experience working in undergraduate science education research, and have strong quantitative or qualitative research skills and experience, such survey and concept inventory data collection and analysis, classroom observation, subject interviews and focus groups, and/or statistical knowledge. Experience with the R software package would be an added benefit.

Engineering Lecturer, University of Tennessee Knoxville

The Engineering Fundamentals Program (EFP) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, seeks a dynamic Lecturer to contribute to its innovative, first-year engineering program. EFP is the home of the engage program, an integrated and team-taught freshman curriculum, and is responsible for teaching nine credit hours of common freshman coursework for each of the College’s first year students (1000 per year). Subject matters taught include physics, perspective of the engineering profession, teaming, design process with projects, engineering communication and basic computer instruction. EFP also teaches a sophomore computer programming course and other classes focused on skills for success during the transition from high school to college, and a leadership class for peer mentors who support the Engage Living and Learning Community, a 200+ student residential community for first year students in the Tickle College of Engineering.  Details of the Engineering Fundamentals Program are available at http://ef.utk.edu.

This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 9-month appointment. The Teaching Quality Framework project takes a systematic and research-based approach to transformation in education, particularly focussing on the deployment of scholarly evaluation tools and processes we use in teaching evaluation.  It is part of a broader effort that seeks to improve undergraduate education at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU), through collective learning and cultural change at the departmental and institutional levels, that is being coordinated through our Center for STEM Learning (CSL). Sixteen departments / units across three colleges are currently engaged in this process and the project is expanding to work with all departments in the College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS). This position will largely be focused on programmatic efforts (e.g., facilitating working groups within CEAS departments), with some opportunities for dissemination through research and publication. 

This is an initial 12-month appointment with an ideal start date of January 13th (flexible) which is potentially renewable, pursuant to university policies and funding. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes benefits as established by the university HR department. The successful candidate will collaborate with a broad group of engaging and nationally renowned faculty, post-docs, and graduate students across multiple departments at CU, with a particular focus on departments within CEAS.

The postdoc on this project will act as both a facilitator and researcher on the project. As a facilitator, the postdoc will actively support departmental change through facilitation of departmental working groups that seek to identify scholarly measures of teaching effectiveness. Additionally, the postdoc will partner with faculty professional development experts in facilitating efforts as well as institutionalizing and scaling the process for improved teaching evaluation.

Our goal is to begin reviewing applications December 2nd, 2019, and we will continue to review applications until the position is filled. Position Summary

The Physics Department invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, fixed- term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The ideal candidate will join a thriving, cohesive, award-winning physics department that deeply values undergraduate education and is committed to evidence-based instructional practices. The lower division educational staff meets every three weeks to discuss curricular matters. The successful candidate will primarily teach lower division physics courses, supervise lower division laboratories, develop curriculum, maintain professional currency, and perform service.
The primary mission of the Department of Physics is to provide undergraduate and graduate education, and conduct basic and applied research. The department offers Doctoral, Masters, and Bachelors degrees in Physics. There are research programs in optics, condensed matter, subatomic physics, astrophysics, cosmology and quantum physics, computational physics, and physics education. The department has over twenty tenure-line and instructional faculty members, approximately 140 majors, and 45 graduate students. Through this position, the Department is looking to enhance its introductory physics courses, both online and on campus.
The College of Science provides a core instructional role at OSU, supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university. 90% Instruction and Student related activities:
Responsibilities may include:
  • Teach regular undergraduate credit courses in either algebra-based or calculus-based General Physics and possibly other courses as assigned by the Department Head. Instruction includes (if applicable) in-class activities, laboratory activities and supervision, class administration, regular office hours, and participation in program-level assessment of student learning, in keeping with the highest professional standards.
  • Sustain a commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Supervise and mentor Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants assigned to their courses.
  • Assist in the training of Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants.
  • Make contributions to general teaching resources such as student-centered classroom activities and online learning systems.
  • Where applicable, assist in the development and delivery of hybrid and/or online versions of General Physics and other courses.
  • Maintain familiarity with recent developments in evidence-based instructional practices.
  • General mentoring of students.
Additionally, instructors are encouraged as appropriate to:
  • Develop, prepare, and submit educational and training grant applications.
  • Perform and supervise undergraduate students in research.
10% Service:
May include any of the following:
  • Service on departmental and university committees related to instruction.
  • Assisting other faculty members as needed, e.g. mentoring part-time instructors.
  • Acting as official advisor for various student organizations and clubs.
  • Participation in activities that increase diversity and inclusion, for example Search Advocate training and mentoring students from underrepresented groups.
  • Engage in departmental outreach activities.
  • Disseminate ideas and methods within the Department, University, and broader community.
