Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in Applied Math at Harvard Univ.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences seeks qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Applied Mathematics with a concurrent lectureship in applied mathematics. The successful candidate will teach applied mathematics and assist with the management of the undergraduate applied mathematics concentration. The undergraduate applied math concentration is Harvard's quantitative liberal arts degree, and as such requires students to learn relevant areas of mathematics and then apply this knowledge to a substantive area of application in the natural sciences, the social sciences, or engineering.

Responsibilities: Undergraduate advising and mentoring, monitoring student progress towards degrees; coordination of the program among diverse constituencies across the Harvard community, development of new courses and assessment of existing courses, advising teaching staff on pedagogy, development and maintenance of concentration-related literature and web presence, and teaching, including two core undergraduate applied mathematics courses. Please note this is a two year, renewable term appointment position. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 31, 2010 AND THE EXPECTED START DATE WILL BE JANUARY 3, 2011.

Basic Qualifications: Requires a Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, economics, physics, or a related field; the documented ability to teach effectively to undergraduates; excellent communication skills; the motivation to help build a broad-based undergraduate applied mathematics community at Harvard; a strong commitment to education and mentoring. Candidates selected for interview will be asked to also provide a statement of teaching philosophy and interests as well as three letters of recommendation, including at least one that addresses teaching ability.
