Research fellowships at Gonville and Caius College

Gonville and Caius College gives notice of its intention to elect in 2011 to a number of Research Fellowships. Candidates should be university graduates or research students and should not have been engaged in full-time post-graduate research for longer than four years, or the equivalent in part-time research, by 1 October 2010. Research Fellowships provide employment for academics in the early stages of their career. You are expected to pursue an uninterrupted research programme resulting in first-class research output that will be submitted for peer-reviewed publication.

Research Fellowships are awarded to men or women judged to be the most able with an exceptionally strong academic record who have demonstrated outstanding capacity to conduct original and innovative doctoral research in science or the humanities. Those to whom Research Fellowships are awarded are about to complete or have just completed a Ph.D. thesis or the equivalent. The College entertains applications in all academic disciplines.

The initial review of your application will be undertaken by Fellows in your field; this will involve consideration of the quality of your CV, a review of your research work to date, consideration of your proposed area of study during your Research Fellowship, and consideration of the quality of the references provided. Following this review, applications are considered by sub-committees in the Arts and Sciences that have responsibility for drawing up a shortlist of candidates whose work is sent to expert readers for further assessment. A small number of strongly recommended candidates are then invited for interview.

The Fellowships will be tenable for four years from a date to be agreed between 1 July and 1 October 2011. Research Fellows are expected to spend the tenure of their Fellowship in Cambridge, and to contribute to the life of the College. Permission may be granted for periods of research away from Cambridge.

The stipend of a Research Fellow who has no other emoluments except from College teaching and who is resident in College is at present £19,188 p.a., rising by three annual increments to £21,546 p.a. and is subject to review. A Research Fellow has an entitlement to single residential accommodation free of rent and to meals in College. Assistance with housing is available to those choosing to live out. A further allowance of £1,298 is payable in respect of the first child. Reimbursement of certain research expenses will also be available.Full details of our application procedures for 2011 are now available online at http://www.cai.cam.ac.uk/rfc
Applications must be completed by Thursday 30 September 2010.
