The Department of Teaching and Learning, UM School of Education, is searching for a new faculty member who specializes in the field of science education. This open rank position will be filled based on finding the best available candidate with the greatest potential for continuing long-term scholarship in the field. We are especially interested in recruiting individuals whose scholarly interests and work include attention to the concerns of urban schools, race, immigrants, English language learners, social class, gender and other forms of social-demographic diversity, broadly construed. Broad training that includes classic views of curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment in the sciences as well as more recent developments in the Learning Sciences and interest/track record in working across fields, disciplines and/or departments are desirable characteristics of our ideal candidate. This individual's work should have the potential for obtaining extramural research funding that can support the development of a chain of inquiry as well as doctoral students who would, in their own turn, enter the academy as science educators. Our ideal candidate would also have experience in K-16 science (and/or engineering) education, working with preservice and inservice science teachers, and delivering professional presentations across a broad range of audiences and interested stakeholders in science education. Knowledge of a second language is also desirable.
With campuses spread throughout the Miami-Dade County metropolitan area, an area that is known as the Gateway to the Americas, the University of Miami has been on a steady upward trajectory in achievements and reputational rankings. At number 38 in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings, the University of Miami has climbed 19 spots over the past 10 years and is the highest ranked University in the State of Florida. Ranked number 52 among Graduate Schools of Education, the UM School of Education has also made similar strides. Composed of three Departments, the mission of the School is to produce knowledge and prepare the next generation of leaders, researchers, and agents of change and well-being in education and the community. The Department of Teaching and Learning has consistently been ranked among the top Departments in the field of curriculum and instruction, as ranked by Academic Analytics whose faculty productivity index looks at publications, placement, extramural funding and other objective indicators of faculty output. In the field of mathematics and science education, its faculty have made significant contributions to the study of equity, language, and urban education as related to STEM education; its faculty have served on numerous national panels and commissions devoted to improving the nation's K-16 mathematics, science and engineering education. They have also collaborated with faculty from across the University of Miami campus on areas of common interest.
The requirements for this position include a doctorate in education with specialization in science education or closely related fields and course work and research interests that are focused on K-16 science education. Individuals applying for this position are expected to have potential for or an established track record (a) scholarly research and publication, (b) teaching, (c) mentoring of doctoral students, (d) extramural funding and (e) professional service that are in keeping with the rank for which they are being considered as per University of Miami policies for hiring of tenured or tenure-track faculty. NOTE: Only the Board of Trustees can confer tenure.
The positions duties include the implementation of a substantive long-term chain of inquiry in science education, teaching undergraduate and graduate students, mentoring of doctoral students including chairing and serving on doctoral committees, service to department, school, university and external professional organizations and extramural funding to support research. Other duties and responsibilities are as outlined in the Faculty Manual.
The position start date is August 15, 2012.
