TT or T joint position in Science Discipline and Education

Science Education - Tenure Track - 2013-14

The St. Olaf Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FNSM) and the Education Department invite applications for a faculty position in science and education at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor. This is a tenure track joint appointment between the Department of Education and one of the science departments within the FNSM (biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology) with a starting date of August 15, 2013.  We seek an individual with (1) potential for excellence in teaching in a liberal arts setting, (2) demonstrated experience and commitment to teaching and teacher training at the secondary level, and (3) ability to develop a strong research program amenable to including undergraduates in science education, a disciplinary area of expertise, or both.  We strongly prefer candidates with a Ph.D. in a natural science (or expect to have one by the time of hire) and have a minimum of three years of licensed teaching experience at the secondary level. Experience and interest in working with underserved populations in the sciences is highly desired.
The position will be a joint position, 1/3 in education and 2/3 in the core science department. Teaching duties are likely to include science courses at both the introductory and advanced levels along with a science methods course in the education department.  Supervision of student teachers is also expected.  With initial grant support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, St. Olaf will provide resources (e.g., summer stipend, travel funds, course release) for this individual to develop St. Olaf programs to support K-12 science education as well as outreach activities to area schools.
All application materials (including letters of recommendation) must be submitted online at https://jobs.stolaf.edu. In the case of large files that cannot be uploaded, please ask for instructions. Applications must include:
  • a cover letter that summarizes the applicant’s interest in this position and how the applicant plans to contribute to the position as described,
  • a Curriculum Vitae,
  • a summary (approximately 2 pages) of the applicant’s teaching philosophy, including a discussion of pedagogical approaches,
  • a discussion of courses the applicant is interested in teaching
  • a detailed description of research interests and plans (approximately 3-5 pages plus references) emphasizing the suitability of the research for undergraduate researchers, how startup-funds might be used, and potential funding opportunities,
  • official or unofficial transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work (unofficial transcripts may need to be supplemented by official transcripts at a later date), and
  • the names of three people who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation. At least two of these letters should specifically address the applicant’s teaching experience and ability. These letters will be requested by St. Olaf College when needed.
Review of completed applications will begin February 1, 2013, with campus interviews expected within 6-8 weeks of that date.
