The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Western Washington University
invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position
starting September 2014. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in physics
or astronomy. Successful applicants must complement existing
departmental research, with preference given to candidates in Physics
Education Research or Astronomy. Candidates should also have a
demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and enthusiasm for
teaching undergraduates. Candidates should be actively engaged in
research with a strong publication record; post-doctoral experience is
also preferred. Effective communication skills and an ability to work
effectively with diverse students and colleagues are highly desired. A
successful applicant will be expected to pursue an on-campus research
program that will actively and sustainably involve undergraduate
students, and to apply for external grant support. For full position

Applications must include (1) a detailed cover letter describing the
applicant's background and why she or he would be interested in joining
the department, (2) a statement of philosophy and interest in teaching,
including a short statement on how the applicant’s background and
experiences (academic or non-academic) have prepared them to effectively
teach increasingly diverse students and work effectively with diverse
colleagues, (3) detailed research proposal with plans for undergraduate
involvement, and (4) a full curriculum vitae including the names,
addresses, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers of three professional
references. Do not send letters of recommendation; they will be
requested only for semi-finalists. Review of applications will begin on
