VAP at Kalamazoo College MI

The Kalamazoo College Physics Department invites applications for a visiting assistant professor of physics for the academic year 2014-2015 with likely extension to a second year for coverage of anticipated sabbaticals.  Extension to a third year is possible.  The position would involve teaching physics at the introductory level in a team-taught, active learning environment, as well as covering upper-level courses. Our department employs an active-learning “flipped classroom” environment in which class and lab are combined and relatively little time is spent lecturing.  Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in physics or closely aligned field, either received or in the final stages of approval, and teaching experience in undergraduate physics courses.  Competitive candidates will have excellent communication skills and command of the English language, will be excited about teaching physics to undergraduates, and will be familiar with and invested in the results of Physics Education Research.
The Physics Department typically enrolls about 120 students/year in its introductory physics course sequence and graduates about 10 majors each year, including some who pursue a 3/2 engineering program. The position will represent a full-time teaching load, but the department is able to supply limited space for research.
To apply, send a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and goals, summary data from teaching evaluations, and undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial acceptable), to Peggy Cauchy, Office Manager, Department of Physics, Kalamazoo College, 1200 Academy Street, Kalamazoo, MI  49006-3295 or by email to cauchy@kzoo.edu.  Your c.v. should include a phone number where you can be reached easily, and the names of three references, along with their email addresses and phone numbers.  Please arrange to have three references send supporting letters. For more information about the College, see our homepage at http://www.kzoo.edu and the departmental homepage at http://www.kzoo.edu/physics/ . Completed applications submitted by March 31 will receive full consideration.  Kalamazoo College encourages candidates who will contribute to the cultural diversity of the College to apply and to identify themselves if they wish.  Equal Opportunity Employer.
