The College of Education-Life Center has an outstanding opportunity for a part time, 50%FTE-100%FTE Continuing Ed. Specialist 3.  In the University of Washington's "Knowledge in Action Project" (KIA), a multidisciplinary research team works with school districts to design and test a rigorous project-based learning approach to Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high schools.  Launched in 2008, initial research focused on the AP U.S. Government and Politics course; current work involves expansion to AP Environmental Science, Physics and to additional school districts.

This position will provide essential expertise in Physics and Physics Education to the multidisciplinary team. Reporting to the Project Principal Investigator, this position will primarily coordinate the KIA project's curriculum refinement and professional development for the Project-based AP physics curriculum.  In addition, this position will coordinate and support classroom-based pilot research for the Project-based AP Physics course.

This position has 15 months of available funding, beginning in June 2014.

Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development/Professional Development
•     Lead and coordinate the activities of the cross-institution course design team to create, compose, and continue to refine experimental curriculum materials for AP Physics, utilizing existing and emerging scientific and pedagogical knowledge.
•     Coordinate delivery of materials, professional development sessions and implementation support (coaching) for participating teachers and district level coordinators.
•     Collaborate with project team to produce educative professional development materials for scaling and dissemination of course.
Research
•     Contribute to theory development on science learning and project-based learning approaches.
•     Collect classroom-and individual-level data from students and teachers across several schools including surveys, oral interviews, video data, and observations.
•     Co-create and refine assessments of learning and engagement in Physics.
•     Contribute to writing and editing of project manuscripts:  technical reports, conference presentations, and journal articles.
•     Participate in conferences

REQUIREMENTS:
•     Master's degree in Science or Education (Bachelor's degree in physical science or engineering strongly preferred)
•     Professional Credential and/or substantial experience in Secondary Science (Physics) Teaching
•     Experience with evaluating and developing science curricula
Additional Requirements
•     Demonstrated ability to be flexible, dependable, and meticulous
•     Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
•     Ability to do some travel (local and out-of-state) for research purposes and conference participation.
•     Commitment to diversity and equity in education.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
