Principal duties:
Scope and complexity of instructional program
The Physics department teaches a range of courses to a wide variety of majors both inside and outside of Physics. Introductory courses, such as the Phy103/104, Phy201/202, and Phy207/208 two-course sequences, consist of lectures led by instructors, with discussion and laboratory sections led by Teaching Assistants (TAs). 1100 students per semester enroll in Phy103/104, taught by 15 TAs and four instructors. The course sequences also include lecture demonstrations, in-class technology, course web presence, and assessment of student learning.
Summary of Principal Duties
Assist with and teach introductory calculus and pre-calculus university physics, including but not limited to one of the Phy103/104, Phy201/202, Phy207/208 two-course sequences; assist with course management, including exams, student issues, enrollment, and technology; curriculum development that may include e-learning, active learning, collaborative learning, writing of discussion problems and quizzes, demonstrations, and laboratories; development and administration of assessment; and teaching assistant coordination and development.

Teaching of introductory calculus and pre-calculus university physics:
  • teach one lecture section in either fall or spring (1 semester/academic year)

Administrative management of one two-course sequence per semester (~1100 students, 16 TAs, per semester), three summer courses (~150 students, 6 TAs), including introductory calculus or pre-calculus university physics:
  • oversee web presence of courses (Learn@UW, Moodle, etc.)
  • set up course web sites
  • provide access to course web sites for course staff
  • set up/maintain course calendar
  • post course documents on course web site
  • set up and maintain gradebook
  • answer student questions (help-desk) about website problems, grades
  • provide technical support (help-desk) for online quizzes
  • provide technical support (help-desk) for online homework
  • provide technical support (help-desk) for in-class technology (i.e. clickers)
  • schedule and organize proctors for exams, make-up exams, McBurney exams
  • schedule review sessions
  • handle student enrollment issues

Curriculum development including e-learning, active learning, collaborative learning, demonstrations, and laboratories of one two-course sequence per semester:
  • develop course materials, discussion problems, quiz & exam questions, homeworks
  • maintain a collaborative web site where faculty and staff can share course materials and best practices
  • maintain the collection of online videos we have produced for "Flexible Physics"
  • develop and maintain powerpoints or videos of lecture demonstrations
  • coordinate with Physics Learning Center

Development and administration of assessments:
  • administer and analyze results from surveys, course evaluations and assessment tools
  • maintain records, evaluate trends

Course teaching assistant coordination and training for one of the Phy103/104, Phy201/202, Phy207/208 two-course sequences in the academic year (~16 TAs), three courses summer (6 TAs):
  • attend weekly course meetings
  • visit discussion sections and provide feedback to TAs
  • review weekly labs with TAs
  • review discussion section plans & materials with TAs
Additional Information:
This position is for the 9 month academic school year. Summer support of 1-2.5 months per year is likely with work in August in particular to prepare for the Fall semester. Program could grow such that the position is converted to a 12 month appointment.
