Essential Functions of Position | Include teaching the full complement of algebra-based and calculus-based physics courses; teaching physics in a variety of settings and modes, including day, evening, face-to-face, and online courses; assessing, revising, and developing curriculum, including physics laboratory procedures; teaching physics laboratories, maintaining lab equipment, and assisting in the coordination of lab budgets and facilities; requisitioning or assuring the availability of lab supplies and equipment; cooperating with colleagues in regard to scheduling courses; participating in the development of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; collecting and assessing data in order to write reports on student learning outcomes; participating in the accreditation process; participating in curriculum and program development and/or revision, including program review; communicating effectively and working cooperatively with students, staff, and campus and community organizations, including advising students, participating in student recruitment activities, and evaluating adjunct instructors; serving on department, campus, and district committees; and otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructional staff as required by Administrative Regulation 7122. Assignments may include classes on the Reedley College campus in Reedley, California or the Madera Center campus in Madera, California. |
Minimum Qualifications | Include an earned master’s degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics; OR bachelor’s degree in physics or astronomyand master’s degree in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics; OR a valid California Community College Credential; OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency); ANDdemonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. |
Desirable Qualifications | Include classroom and laboratory teaching experience encompassing the breadth of courses taught; the use of a variety of pedagogies; the ability to integrate educational technologies into classroom and laboratory instruction; education and related work experience in teaching physics, physical science, and astrophysics; experience in the administration of course budgets including the selection, installation, and maintenance of lab equipment and other supplies for physics courses; the ability to design and implement innovative teaching methodologies based on physics education research; the commitment to interacting and working successfully as a team with science instructors, laboratory technicians, and other colleagues; enthusiasm for teaching and assisting students to succeed; the ability to develop curriculum in emerging areas of physics and astronomy; the capacity to contribute to the total operation of the instructional program including Department, Division, and College responsibilities; the demonstrated ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities including distance learning; knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals; working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students; and related work and professional experience and potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth. |

Salary and Benefits | Salary is $54,029 – $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS). |
Selection Procedure | Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
