The National Institute of Education (http://www.nie.edu.sg/) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Physics at the Natural Sciences & Science Education Academic Group (NSSE AG). The NSSE AG (http://www.nie.edu.sg/academic-groups/natural-sciences-and-science-education) conducts teaching and research in both science and science-education, and comprises academic staff with backgrounds in biology, chemistry, physics, design & technology, and family/consumer sciences. For physics, NIE has facilities for state of the art research in plasma physics, material science, solar cells, FTIR spectroscopy, nuclear physics and physics education. The Institute supports research through internal research grants and strongly encourages and supports its staff in obtaining external grants.
The position is available from Jan 2016 onwards. The successful candidate will be offered a 3-year contract position in the first instance.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to teach students in undergraduate, postgraduate diploma and graduate courses. In addition to typical physics courses at BSc level, the candidate should be prepared to teach MSc evening classes and primary science topics. Other duties include some course co-ordination, content upgrading for in-service teachers and provision of expert advice to schools on science projects. The incumbent will be expected to supervise teacher trainees in practicum attachments and mentor graduate students. He/She is required to conduct research and publish peer-reviewed papers. Candidates with the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research will be especially favoured. The appointee may be requested to serve on committees in the Institute/University and offer consultancy and professional services to the Ministry of Education and other public education-related organizations in Singapore.
Qualifications and Requirements
The successful candidate should have a PhD in physics and be able to teach in English. He/She must have a strong background in theoretical physics with the ability to teach quantum and classical mechanics, modern physics, relativity, and statistical mechanics. He/She must be committed to excellence in teaching and in communicating science to teachers and students in primary and secondary schools. Having post-doctoral experience, prior teaching experience, or having studied or conducted research, especially in multilingual and multicultural environments, are desirable.
