Term Instructor, University of Minnesota Duluth

Applications are invited for a full time, non-tenure track position an an Instructor or Assistant Professor of Physics/Astronomy at the University of Minnesota Duluth, to begin August 22, 2016. The appointment will be for one year, and then renewable for three years depending upon performance, resources, and departmental needs. The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers B.S. degrees in Physics and Applied Physics, a B.A. degree in Physics, and an M.S. in Physics. The campus is located in northeastern Minnesota at the tip of Lake Superior, approximately 165 miles north of Minneapolis and 90 miles south of the Soudan Underground Laboratory, and is home to the Large Lakes Observatory. The physics Department has particular research strengths in astronomy, particle physics, cosmology, condensed matter physics, and physical oceanography/limnology. Duties:
The successful candidate will be expected to fully contribute to the teaching, advising, and service responsibilities of the Physics Department.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications are a M.S. (instructor position) or Ph.D. (assistant professor position) in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited university;a minimum of one year of experience teaching (as a TA) a diverse group of students at the undergraduate level, including ability in written communication. Preferred qualifications are undergraduate-level teaching experience beyond conventional TA duties; experience teaching in an active learning classroom setting; ability to enthusiastically attract students to the field of physics including those students who traditionally have been underrepresented in the STEM fields;and ability to work well in a collaborative environment, including ability in oral communication.
