Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time, one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics to begin September 1, 2017 (subject to final approval). This position should be attractive to recent or imminent Ph.D. recipients who are considering a career at a liberal arts college or small university. The department considers the mentoring of new faculty to be an important part of visiting appointments, and has a successful record in this regard.
The Physics Department has a nationally recognized program providing general-education courses in the liberal arts and service courses for majors in other science disciplines, as well as a comprehensive physics major. Gustavus graduates an average of 18 physics majors per year, of whom a very high percentage pursue graduate and professional degrees. The department is staffed by 6.0 FTE faculty, and is housed and well-equipped in the 64,000 square-foot Olin Hall of Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. Minimum Required Qualifications: We seek candidates who have an earned doctorate in physics (or a related field), but will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. The successful candidate must have a record of successful physics teaching at the TA level or beyond, and be comfortable teaching with modern laboratory instructional equipment and software. A commitment to undergraduate teaching is essential.
Preferred Qualifications: We are interested in applicants who will complement our commitment to students and faculty from diverse cultural groups, and who will diversify the expertise and experiences represented in the department. Previous academic experience with diverse populations is highly desirable.
Major/Essential Functions: Primary responsibilities during the fall and spring semesters will include approximately 12 contact hours per week in lecture and laboratory courses at the introductory and upper level for various audiences. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to teach a course during our interim January term (a one-month experimental course). There will be some opportunities for visiting faculty to collaborate in undergraduate research in areas such as AMO, optics, acoustics, and other fields, although research activity is not an expectation of this position.
