Programs Manager at APS

The American Physical Society (APS) www.aps.org, the premier membership association for physicists, seeks a dynamic and personable science professional to fill the position of Minority Bridge Program Project Manager based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). At present, this is a part-time (.50 FTE), one-year position, however it is anticipated that this position will be extended to full time beginning mid-year 2011. The Minority Bridge Program Project Manager reports to the APS Director of Education and Outreach and works in conjunction with the Diversity Programs Administrator, to organize and carry out program elements aimed at developing national bridge programs that will increase the number of minorities receiving doctoral degrees in physics. Responsibilities include: Extensive travel (10-12 short overnight trips) to minority serving institutions to establish contacts and set up recruiting links with minority students suitable for entry into bridge programs at doctoral institutions. Organize a summer national gathering to bring together minority students, doctoral granting institution faculty, and minority-serving institution faculty to further plans for establishing bridge programs, provide initial mentoring for students, and build energy in the community for continued work on this project; conduct a literature review into known barriers that limit minority participation in graduate programs, and summarize the findings in a web document outlining the issues; write summary documents and plans for the next steps in establishing bridge programs.

PhD in physics or related science required. Experience and compassion in dealing with issues faced by minorities or the underprivileged and an understanding of the issues faced in undergraduate and graduate education in physics needed. Ability to travel a must. Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary. Starting salary $30 - $32 per/hr.
