The Position: 
The Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering Technology at Point Park University invites applications for a tenure-track position as an assistant professor of physics beginning in the fall of 2015. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses to support the department's bachelor of science programs in biology, pre-professional studies and engineering technology.
The primary duties of this position are developing and delivering lecture and laboratory courses in physics. The successful candidate must possess a demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively in oral, written, and digital forms. A willingness to teach in other areas such as mathematics is highly desirable. Because the programs serve a large adult student population, courses are regularly offered on an evening and weekend schedule and the candidate must be available to teach at these times as well as traditional students during day classes.
Additional duties of the position include advising students on academic and career matters, participating in institutional service and governance, engaging in professional development, and furthering connections between the University and its external constituencies. An essential component of institutional service is a commitment to outcomes-based education and participation in assessment of student learning.
The successful candidate must hold an earned doctoral degree in physics or a closely-related area. Previous experience in teaching at the college level is highly desirable. Exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at the rank of associate professor.

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The general purpose of this position is to provide technical support for the experimental activities undertaken by the Physics Department in its teaching and research laboratories in the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science  and Technology. Such support includes oversight of the preparation of experiments conducted during laboratory classes, supervision and training of student workers, serving as the Departmental Safety Representative, managing the Physics inventory and hazardous waste, ordering equipment, supplies and chemicals, and managing the Machine Shop.


Technical support for Physics and Biophysics Curriculum and Faculty
  • Setup, maintain and tear down laboratory class experiments and lecture demonstrations. Must develop a working knowledge of all laboratory experiments in the physics curriculum.
  • Provide input on lower division lab design and most effective equipment to achieve laboratory goals
  • Provide input on most effective lecture demonstration equipment to achieve desired goals
  • Manage equipment and experiments for upper-division laboratory courses
  • Manage equipment and experiments associated with independent student research projects
  • Supervise students conducting select research projects focused on experiment design and
    equipment development and characterization.
  • Work with lead laboratory instructors to design/maintain/update course equipment lists.
  • Train new faculty and adjunct faculty how to operate equipment when needed.
  • Repair old equipment when necessary, and assist in bringing new equipment “on-line”.
  • Organize and maintain all Physics laboratory preparation rooms and stock rooms.
  • Work with the Building Manager and the other Laboratory Technicians to organize and
    maintain shared spaces. 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Laboratory Technician II supervises all work-study students assigned to the Physics Department. He or she is responsible for providing safety training to work study students and managing approvals related to safety training and key card access of undergraduate research
students in faculty laboratories. He or she provides machining tools training to students and faculty as necessary, and coordinates work schedules with other laboratory technicians, lab preparation personnel, and student workers to insure class preparations are met by established deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A master's degree in Physics or a related field from an accredited university is required. Coursework must include a minimum of 2 years of physics with laboratory. Experience in experimental physics research and/or instruction is preferred. Other requirements include:
      • The ability and willingness to maintain common physics instrumentation and to train and
        supervise undergraduate workers.
      • A working knowledge and experience with undergraduate physics laboratory curriculum.
      • A desire to develop and test experiments for undergraduate laboratory courses, and work
        with physics faculty to achieve course goals.
      • General office skills needed to manage the equipment inventory and hazardous waste.
      • Training will be required in Oracle system implemented at USD for purchasing, budgeting
        and accounting.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

Full-time, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Physics available beginning Fall 2015 in the Engineering Science and Physics Department. Master's degree in physics is required; doctorate is preferred. Responsibilities will include teaching physics in the classroom, laboratory and online. Three years of teaching experience or an appropriate combination of teaching, relevant work experience, and scholarly activity are required. Prior teaching, especially in a community college environment, is preferred. 

Preference given to applicants with demonstrated interest and ability in the use of alternative and innovative instructional methods, familiarity with the use of technology in the classroom, and on-line teaching experience. Job Summary/Basic Function:
This position provides collegiate level instruction in Physics.  
Experience
Teaching experience on the college level is preferred, but not required.  
Education
A minimum of a Master's degree in Physics (with a minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter graduate hours in Physics) or a closely related science discipline is required. Doctoral degree is preferred. 
GPC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) with all courses taught by SACS-qualified instructors. 
 
Scope/ Impact
 
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to teach Physics on the collegiate level. Ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods, relate to students and facilitate student learning. Must be knowledgeable of current laboratory safety practice and procedures. Excellent communication skills required. Requires excellent organizational skills required to maintain laboratory equipment, work within the department budget and produce, revise, and maintain appropriate records, such as accurate laboratory protocols for preparation and teaching materials, experiments and procedures. Must be able to effectively work with the Department Chair, Science Faculty, and staff, including supervising laboratory assistants. Effective computer skills and use of teaching and laboratory technology are required.  
Physical Requirements:
Position requires local travel. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds of materials. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate hand-eye coordination to use complex lab equipment in a safe and accurate manner is required. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone, and in writing. Job takes place in normal laboratory and/or classroom and/or office environmental conditions.
