Clinical Assistant Professor Master Teacher, Florida International University

The STEM Transformation Institute is searching for one Master Teacher for the FIUteach program with a preference for specialization in physics, but excellent candidates from other sciences or mathematics will be considered. FIUteach is a replication of the mature, successful UTeach model for recruiting, preparing, and inducting secondary science and mathematics teachers into teaching careers in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The Master Teacher is the primary point of contact for undergraduate students in the FIUteach program and will teach initial courses in the teacher education program as well as supervising students in elementary, middle and high school settings. The individual selected as Master Teacher must have a master’s degree in science or mathematics or in science/math education and a minimum of five years of experience as a secondary classroom teacher in science or math. Master Teachers will be hired as Clinical Faculty and will report to program co-directors and work closely with the Project Director. Master Teachers are responsible for: teaching Step 1 & Step 2 classes, planning and carrying out field experiences for FIUTeach students and other duties as assigned. This position requires travel throughout Florida to work with teachers and students in the schools, attendance at meetings with high school teachers, and supervisors, etc. Position also requires one or more out-of-state trips/year to attend UTeach conferences and other related meetings.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in science, mathematics or related field, with a doctorate preferred. Minimum 5 years as a secondary classroom teacher, with a preference for public school experience Interest in being part of a teacher professional preparation program. 

Responsibilities:
Persons appointed as clinical faculty members in the FIUTeach program are non-tenured faculty who will be hired into the STEM Transformation Institute. An appointment to this position will primarily involve participation in teaching and/or supervising undergraduate students in courses and experiences related to field-based teacher development. Primary responsibilities include teaching field-based courses students take in their pursuit of certification, identifying qualified local public school teachers who can serve as mentor teachers, working with local area public school teachers who act as mentors for the students, working with the College’s Field Placement Office to coordinate field placements and student teaching sites for students, and conducting field observations of the students. Additional duties will include student mentoring and other programmatically related tasks.
