DESCRIPTION
The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the EVC for advancing teaching excellence and student success. The mission of the Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; be an incubator for student academic success innovations; increase access to education on campus and beyond: and, actively promote equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services. Through six unique but integrated hubs, the Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to enhance their teaching (inside and outside the classroom, in traditional as well as in digital teaching and learning settings); support undergraduate and graduate students to advance their success at UC San Diego and beyond; support graduate students to develop their professional development as instructors; and actively promote equity and inclusion within its organization and through its programs and services.
The Engaged Teaching Hub (ETH) is one of six hubs within The Commons. ETH promotes faculty and student success through programs and resources that support faculty and graduate students in their teaching roles. Our goal is to inspire and advance teaching excellence through evidence-based, learner-centered, and equitable teaching practices. The programs and services of ETH serve the entire university’s teaching community, including ladder-rank professors, teaching professors, non-Senate lecturers, and adjuncts, as well as graduate students working as teaching assistants and postdoctoral scholars preparing to enter the faculty ranks in the future.
The Engaged Teaching Hub (ETH) Associate Director reports to the Associate Director of the Teaching + Learning Commons and works closely with The Commons leadership team. Under the general guidance of the Associate Director of the Commons, the ETH Associate Director is responsible for: promoting teaching and learning as ongoing and collaborative processes of inquiry, experimentation, and reflection; co-leading a team of education developers dedicated to educational equity and the theory, practice, and scholarship of teaching and learning; contributing to the research on pedagogical issues that impact educators and students in higher education; and promoting a university culture that encourages the creation of learning environments in which all students can excel, thus advancing UC San Diego’s mission as a student-centered public research university.
Works collaboratively with the ETH leadership team to conceptualize and establish a comprehensive system that assists the entire university’s teaching community; serves as a campus resource for information about teaching and learning resources; sponsors and facilitates learning communities; and promotes and disseminates research and scholarship on student learning and university teaching, including effective, evidence and equity-based practices and emerging practices in program assessment.
The ETH Associate Director plays a key role in developing and implementing methods for assessing the impact of The Commons initiatives and programs on student learning, and contributes to the identification of legitimate measures of success (e.g., student retention and time to degree, students’ academic success within the university, and students’ post-university trajectories).
