Description of Job

We are searching for an individual with a background in Physics or Engineering to direct the Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) at Edgewood. The Fab Lab is a space that is available for students, faculty,   staff to design and build projects. Equipment includes 3D printers, a Boss laser cutter, Arduino electronics, an injection molding system, and assorted had tools. The Director will maintain equipment for the facility, train students to use the equipment, supervise student projects, and teach courses that utilize the facility. 

Prior experience working in a Fab Lab or Makerspace environment with students is preferred. The ideal candidate will also have experience teaching at either the secondary or college level, and be willing to work on program development and assessment.

Currently, Edgewood College has a “pre-engineering” concentrations within the Physics and Chemistry majors. We also have partnerships with UW-Platteville and Madison College that attract students interested in engineering. This position will be housed in the Department of Chemistry, Geoscience, & Physics (CGP). This will be a 10-month, academic year position. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the “Fab Lab” facility
    • Maintain Fab Lab and Physics laboratory equipment
    • Provide appropriate safety trainings for Fab Lab users, and development new safety protocols when necessary
    • Work within a budget to select and order equipment/supplies for the Fab Lab
    • Supervise student projects
    • Facilitate workshops related to teaching students to use the Fab Lab equipment
    • Coordinate use of the facility for faculty, staff, and students both from the pre-engineering program and from outside of the CGP Department
    • Help faculty develop ways to integrate use of Fab Lab into existing courses

       

  • Teaching
    • Teach engineering-related courses in the department, such as Intro to Engineering, 3D Modeling & Design, Statics, Scientific Computing (course load varies depending on the semester)
    • Develop additional new courses in engineering, based on candidate’s area of expertise
    • Assist in teaching physics courses as needed by the department

       

  • Coordinate Pre-engineering Programs
    • Promote pre-engineering programs to recruit prospective students, both new freshman and transfer students
    • Advise students interested in pre-engineering majors and/or engineering careers
    • Maintain and expand on Edgewood’s existing Pre-Engineering programs
    • Maintain and build partnerships with other colleges and universities
    • Assessment of pre-engineering and related programs

Job Qualifications

Necessary Education or Work Experience

  • Master’s Degree in in Physics, Engineering or related field
  • Experience working with students in a Makerspace or Fab Lab environment
  • Teaching experience in physics and/or engineering
