The Department of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenured position at the Associate Professor level with a focus in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ( STEM ) Education, with primary responsibilities in the Learning Sciences program.

The Learning Sciences program offers MS and PhD degrees in Learning and Cognition, as well as master’s degrees in Secondary Science Education, Statistics, Instructional Design and Educational Technology. Learning Sciences faculty also contribute to undergraduate teacher education in elementary and secondary methods in science, mathematics, and technology education, as well as general survey courses in learning and research. Faculty conduct basic or applied research in their area of expertise and provide support to the graduate programs across the department, as well as to the undergraduate teacher education degree programs in the College of Education.

Position Rank: This is a nine-month, full-time tenured position. The appointment is at the rank of Associate Professor.

Applicant Required Qualifications: This position requires an earned doctorate in Educational Psychology, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Engineering Education, Learning Sciences, Psychology, or a related field. Candidates should have an established program of theory-driven research that studies the intersection of STEM Education with learning and cognition.

We invite candidates whose research programs focus on either formal (K-16 learning environments) or informal STEM learning environments, and we are open to types of research design and areas of methodological expertise (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods).

  • Evidence of leadership in obtaining external funding and publishing works related to individual research agenda.

Position Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of the position will include:

  1. Develop and sustain a program of scholarly research related to STEM Education and closely related fields.
  2. Design, teach, and coordinate core courses at the undergraduate or graduate level in critical areas of STEM education (i.e., science education methods, math education methods, engineering education, and/or technology education).
  3. Participate and provide leadership in interdisciplinary STEM education initiatives across the College of Education and at the University level.
  4. Advise and supervise graduate student master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.
  5. Serve as an organizer, collaborator and/or principal investigator for research and service proposals to appropriate national agencies and foundations.
  6. Provide appropriate levels of service at the program, college, and university levels, as well as to the community and profession.

About the Department

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is comprised of 16 full-time faculty and 110 undergraduate physics majors.  Physics B.S. and Math/Physics B.A.Ed. degrees are offered in addition to minor degrees in both physics and astronomy.  In recent years, the department has placed increased emphasis on providing meaningful research opportunities for its majors, including hiring new tenure-track faculty committed to undergraduate research. Members of the department are also active in the development of new educational materials and innovative teaching methods.  The common vision shared within the department is to make the WWU Department of Physics and Astronomy the most outstanding undergraduate program of its kind in the nation.

About the Position

Full-time, tenure-track assistant professor, beginning September 2022. Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will enhance existing strengths in undergraduate education and science teacher preparation and will contribute actively to identifying and responding to new challenges and opportunities in these areas.  Teaching assignments (typically five courses per academic year) will be distributed evenly between courses in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and courses in SMATE.  An active research program on the teaching and learning of physics and/or astronomy is expected, especially one that engages undergraduate research assistants and supports collaborations within and between SMATE and Physics.  Service activities include departmental committees and student advising.  The successful applicant will work to close existing gaps in student retention and success and to provide equitable and inclusive learning opportunities for all students.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in physics, astronomy or closely related field, OR in science education together with upper-division or graduate-level course work in physics. Candidates who have completed all degree requirements except for the dissertation may apply; all degree requirements must be completed by June 15th of the first year of employment.
  • Record of scholarly research on the learning and teaching of physics and/or the learning and teaching of astronomy

The Colorado School of Mines seeks a full-time post-doctoral researcher to work with an NSF grant-funded project called Get the Facts Out: Changing the Conversation around STEM teaching.  Get the Facts Out is an innovative partnership led by Mines that includes the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Chemical Society, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, behavior change researchers, teacher educators, and several colleges and universities which serve as study sites. The grant aims to tackle misperceptions about the teaching profession with the goal of increasing the fraction of physics, chemistry, and math majors that choose to pursue middle and high school teaching as a career.

 

This position requires travel to the annual project team meeting and a national conference to report on project findings. The post-doc will work with Wendy Adams, Physics Education Research Faculty member, and David May, research manager.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on perceptions of teaching as a profession, including longitudinal analyses of perceptions through surveys, site visits, interviews, and focus groups.
  • Conduct teacher recruitment activities at Mines including presentations, advising, and assisting with scholarship decisions. 
  • Supervise undergraduate research assistants, manage budgets, and report findings through peer-reviewed publications.

 

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have earned a doctoral degree before the position start date in physics, chemistry, mathematics, science education, or communications.
  • Candidates can either have a degree in education research or demonstrated interest in education research.

Utica College, a small comprehensive college in Upstate New York, is seeking applications for a

Founded in 1946, Utica College is a private comprehensive institution distinguished for its

to students. The College enrolls approximately 3,700 students – approximately 2,700

undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students.
