 Western Michigan University invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate professor of Science Education. This will be a joint appointment between the Mallinson Institute for Science Education (primary department) and one of the following five science departments: Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Environment, Geography, and Sustainability; Geological and Environmental Sciences; or Physics. The successful candidate will conduct research on equity in college-level science education.

 Title: Assistant or Associate Professor, Tenure track

 Major Responsibilities:

-Conduct research on equity in college-level science education.

-Publish in peer-reviewed journals.

-Secure external funding to support research.

-Teach graduate courses in science education.

-Chair and serve on thesis and dissertation committees for PhD students in science education.

-Teach undergraduate courses in one of the five science departments.

-Provide service at the department, college, and/or university level.

 Minimum Qualifications:

-A PhD in Science Education, one of the five science disciplines, or a related field awarded by August 2025.

-Evidence of commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity through publications, teaching, and/or service.

 Desired Qualification:

-Research experience in the area of science education, particularly related to equity at the college level.

-Scholarly publications in the area of science education.

-Experience supervising or mentoring undergraduate or graduate level projects, theses, or dissertation.

-Experience teaching and/or designing introductory science courses.

-Experience teaching and/or designing graduate-level courses in science education.

-Experience applying for and/or receiving research funding.

 The Mallinson Institute for Science Education: The interdisciplinary Mallinson Institute for Science Education (MISE) exists to advance knowledge through research to improve the teaching and learning of science, in and out of the classroom. We prepare science-focused graduate students from all over the world to be reflective and engaged scholars of science education. MISE functions like an academic department in the WMU organizational structure. Most faculty are jointly appointed between MISE and one of five science departments. MISE runs a PhD program in science education, with over 40 enrolled students, that can be completed in person or completely online. It is one of only a small number of PhD programs in science education that operate within a college of arts and sciences (as opposed to a college of education). MISE faculty are recognized as expert scholars within their disciplines (e.g., chemistry education research, physics education research) and also collaborate on interdisciplinary science education projects. MISE faculty have research expertise in equity in STEM, college science teaching, evaluation and assessment, educational change, and history and philosophy of science. We are interested in expanding our expertise to include informal science education and service learning.

 Kalamazoo: Kalamazoo is located only two and a half hours by car from Chicago and Detroit and only 45 minutes from the beaches of Lake Michigan. Essential Job Duties
The College of Sciences at NC State University is seeking talented and innovative faculty with expertise and experience in research and teaching in a Sciences discipline as well as expertise in science communication, outreach, education, and/or policy for three tenure-track assistant professor positions. TWO Instructional Assistant Professors, Ole Miss MS

 Instructional Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy


Position Description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for two Instructional Assistant Professor (IAP) appointments starting in August 2025. These are long-term positions with a track for promotion to Associate and full Instructional Professor. A Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field will be required by the start of employment. The department is committed to effective undergraduate teaching. We seek candidates with a passion for teaching, and experience in evidence-based approaches to teaching physics and/or astronomy at the college level is required.

Teaching duties include up to three courses per semester. Both IAPs will teach introductory courses with some opportunities to teach upper-division courses. Responsibilities will also include some coordination of the associated labs and supervision of lab TAs.
 
The person hired in the IAP Physics position will primarily teach physics courses.
The person hired in the IAP Astronomy position will primarily teach astronomy courses.
 
The successful applicants are expected to be an integral part of the department and participate in service to the department, university, and the wider community. Service opportunities include outreach activities, mentoring graduate teaching assistants, and building student community through undergraduate advising, mentorship, and student clubs. Professional development opportunities include facilitating and attending Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) workshops, applying for university and/or external grants to redesign courses and their labs, and attending regional and national conferences and workshops focused on teaching.

Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Teaching Professor for the Mathematical Biology Curriculum, UCLA

 As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, and building on a decade of hiring faculty who are committed to supporting the success of the diverse undergraduate student population at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the Division of Life Sciences, Department of Integrated Biology & Physiology Department, and the Life Science Education Department invites applicants for an Assistant Teaching Professor. Over the past 10 years, UCLA has developed a revolutionary approach to teaching mathematics to life science students. This two-quarter course is called Mathematics for Life Scientists (LIFESCI 30) and is based on the text Modeling Life. LIFESCI 30, which heavily incorporates active and inclusive teaching practices, has been shown to improve student interest and self-efficacy in Mathematics, performance in future STEM classes, and retention in STEM. The candidate’s primary teaching responsibility will be teaching this class, and will also include opportunities to develop an upper-division course applying Mathematics in Biology.

JOB SUMMARY

The Physics Department of the University of Connecticut invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in the area of Physics Education Research. The research is focused on exploring the experiences of disabled physics graduate students and faculty members using mixed methods. The Barriers and Solutions for Physics Graduate Students and Faculty with Disabilities in Training and Workplace Settings (DISMANTLE) project is composed of three strands: 

  1. Development: What are the barriers and solutions experienced by disabled physics graduate students and faculty in informal settings? 
  2. Surveying the community: What are the views of physics faculty and members of the broader physics communities about disability in the physics workplace and training setting?
  3. Lived experiences of disabled graduate students and faculty: What are the barriers and solutions that affect disabled physics graduate students and faculty in informal settings?

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The postdoctoral research associate’s work will be focused on the second strand (surveying the community). The postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to take a lead role in the study design, execution, and dissemination. 

The postdoctoral research associate will (a) participate as a team member of the DISMANTLE team (NSF EES 2348210EES 2348211EES 2348212), (b) support dissemination of project activities and results (e.g., conference presentations, journal articles, policy briefs, infographics), (c) coordinate data collection (e.g., scheduling, data entry, coordinate data), (d) conduct advanced statistical modeling and analyses using latent variable modeling, Item Response Theory, and Bayesian approaches under the guidance and supervision of project PIs, and (e) supervise student workers. In addition, this person will also have the capacity to pursue, secure, and manage additional external funding opportunities consistent with this position's focus.

The postdoctoral research associate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Erin Scanlon (UConn-Avery Point) and will collaborate with a larger research team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Drs. Allison Lombardi, Graham Rifenbark, Carlyn Mueller) and University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (Dr. Emily Tarconish). The candidate will be stationed at UConn’s Avery Point campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ph.D. in physics, disability studies, education psychology, special education, and/or related disciplines.
  2. At least 1 year of experience as a quantitative data analyst or related experience.
  3. At least 1 year of experience working on survey research projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Expertise with quantitative research and survey methods, disability studies, and/or personal experience with disability.
  2. Previous experience with federally funded postsecondary education research focused on disability studies.
  3. Previous experience conducting statistical analyses with latent variable modeling, Item Response Theory, and Bayesian methods.
  4. Previous experience as a methodologist designing research studies.
  5. Previous experience with data storage and management procedures.
  6. Demonstrated experience working independently and as a member of a research team that may include teachers and administrators.
  7. Familiarity with R, Mplus, and/or other statistical software programs.
  8. Familiarity with video editing and/or graphical displays to enhance research presentations and dissemination.
  9. Evidence of a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals related to physics education research, disability studies, and quantitative research methods.

Job Responsibilities

 

The primary responsibilities for this position will be:

 

·        Teach three courses per year and contribute to curriculum development,

·        Advise undergraduate students pursuing degrees in physics and/or astrophysics,

·        Manage and oversee the operation of the rooftop observatory, including initiating activities to enhance and upgrade observatory facilities as needed.
