Department Chair at Eastern Kentucky

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for the 12-­‐month position of Department Chair beginning July 1, 2013. Administrative duties include supervision of staff, managing the departmental budget, scheduling of classes, supporting and guiding scholarly activities, overseeing student recruitment and retention, directing the department's efforts toward regional stewardship, and representing the department at the college and university levels. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate will demonstrate support for the Department's new programs in undergraduate research and recently implemented activity-based instruction in introductory physics courses. The Department has eight full-time faculty members, two staff members, offers undergraduate programs in physics, physics education, and pre-engineering, and serves approximately 60 students in those majors. The Department recently moved into a new, state-of-the-art science building.

Eastern Kentucky University has a student body of about 16,000 students and is located in the scenic Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, 25 miles south of Lexington. The University is committed to providing educational programs, research, extension, and continuing education services to Eastern Kentucky.
Required qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, the rank of Associate Professor or higher, and credentials sufficient for tenure. Other requirements include excellence in teaching, a record of scholarly achievement, and administrative experience.
