QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (ABD considered) in Physics or a related field
THE POSITION: Hastings College seeks an Assistant Professor of Physics to teach all levels of undergraduate physics courses, a course for non-science majors, and guided yearlong senior thesis projects. The applicant is expected to have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment, but we will consider candidates at the ABD stage. Teaching load is twelve hours per semester and one three hour course during our three-week January Term. The College gives highest priority to teaching effectiveness. Willingness to advise, counsel and work closely with students is essential. This is a tenure-track appointment. A comprehensive employee benefit package, including a sabbatical program is provided.
THE DEPARTMENT: By working closely with their students and providing a strong experimentally based program, the Physics Department has achieved an exceptional record of placing its alumni in graduate and professional schools. Close to 70% of physics majors continue in graduate programs throughout the country. Over the last few years, the program has grown significantly, and it is an exciting time of change for the Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist/take a leadership role in curriculum revisions and implementations of new teaching methodologies. The Department of Physics is a part of the Science Division, along with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and occupies the north end of the first floor of the Morrison-Reeves Science Center which opened in the fall of 2009. THE COLLEGE: Founded in 1882, Hastings College is an independent, coeducational, Presbyterian-related liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1150 students. The student/faculty ratio is 13/1. The median ACT composite of entering students is about 24. The College operates on a 4-1-4 calendar with a January Term that runs for 3 weeks.
THE COMMUNITY: Hastings (pop. 25,100) is an attractive residential community in South-Central Nebraska, 100 miles west of Lincoln, and 15 minutes south of Interstate 80. The city enjoys good public and private schools, offers excellent professional and community services, and serves as a cultural center for a large surrounding area.
